I've banked with Navy Federal Credit Union for over a decade, and with Wells Fargo as my day to day checking account. Now, I'm getting to the point where I would prefer a local branch to have. I will still probably do 98% of my banking online and through direct deposit, and bill pay, but it would be nice to have a branch to just walk in in a pinch. I'm in northern Ohio, so my choices are Chase, 5/3, Huntington, Key, Northwest, various small credit unions, and small community type banks.
I'm on chexsystems for old charged off checking account with Chase and Key from several years ago, and an old one with 5/3 that was paid off. They may be off by now, I'm not sure how long chexsystems or Early WArning Services work, but I have been declined an account in the past month, which is what has me checking on these things...
Of the ones listed, it seems that Huntington would be my best choice. They're local, my employer uses them, I'd get direct deposit, and there is a branch within five minutes of my home and five minutes of work. I applied online, and it was approved about a week ago. As of today, its still open and fine, my debit card has been sent, too. I've heard horror stories that some banks don't check EWS or chex at account opening, though and just run those reports later, or not at all. I'd really hate to switch my direct deposits, set up bill pay and get everythin gstarted, only for Huntington to say "ya know what, we're gonna just go ahead and close your account"...
Does anyone here have any experience in this area? These accounts with chex are over a couple of years old, and for relatively small balances. I could PIF them, but I don't want to wake anything up, I guess.
I don't have any direct experience with Huntington as I live in Arizona, but on Doctor of Credit the seem to have a pretty good reputation. Both Chase & Huntington Bank use EWS and Huntington is a pretty good sized bank so I doubt if they would not check EWS on account opening. It's possible that your charged off accounts from "several years ago" have fallen off, Chex keeps derog records for 5 years, not sure about EWS. As they've sent you a debit card you're probably good to go, but before changing your payroll direct deposits you might make a few make a few deposits & withdrawals, either online or in branch, to make sure all is OK before moving your payroll DD.
