You could try calling; explain you don't have his member # but have the name & DOB, maybe they can look up the number & add it for you?

All they can say is no..

I had just joined last night. I am sure they are going to want more than his name and DOB although the fact we have the same name and I’m the second (II) lends an awful let of credibility to him being my father lol. If I feel like making the call, I will do so, but I really should garden anyway and I know I’ll end up with a credit card that I’ll SD if I get a full membership. No self control 😂

You could always get the 5% on gas all year.  No need to SD that.

This is true, but based on his posts in other threads a gas card isn't likely to be useful to him.

@Anonymous, if it were me I would go ahead and call them to see if they can find a membership for your father, since their banking is about as good as it gets (even slightly better than NFCU... I actually use USAA for my primary checking).

However, I would probably hold of on applying for one of their cards for a few reasons.  Unless I'm mistaken they don't have anything that will beat what you already have card-wise.  Secondly, their APRs are fixed at approval (similar to Chase); they won't lower it later.  With your other recent apps you'll probably get one of their higher APRs (I know it shouldn't matter if you PIF, but it's worth mentionting).  Thirdly, you'll likely get a SL on the low-end, and with USAA there's a HP for CLI requests (EX or EQ - they've used both for me on different occasions).

If you get your membership straightenend out, you can always pick up a card later on once your profile cools off a bit.

Data point: I got my Limitless at the end of a spree two years ago.  My application was the same day they opened up for my state;  I considered waiting, but I was afraid they would pull the product (which eventually happened).  I was approved, but the APR was at the highest APR, which is higher than my other older USAA card.  Also, at that time they didn't use the 'regular' FICO 8, they used one of the other versions, which for many (including myself) is a bit lower.

Just my 2¢.

Lol I’m still using FirstBank for my checking, NFCU has too much downtime with their app right now for me to move it over there. I just need to call FirstBank and cancel my debit card and it becomes 100% fee free.

I will probably call, I just really hate calling.

That is unfortunate that APRs are fixed at time of approval so yeah the absolute earliest I would apply would be 9/2020 if I get ACS off my credit report in March like it should be or it wouldn’t be until 11/2021 if they don’t fix my DOFD. And thanks for the info on Chase because in that case, I am going to hold off on Chase until the ACS and BK fall as well. Now my 5/24 status won’t matter until I know if ACS is coming off in March or 11/2021.

That's probably what I would do as well... might as well have things as "pretty" as possible to get the most bang-for-your-buck when you do apply.

FWIW, when I got my older USAA 'Platinum Rewards' Visa card, I still had a few baddies, and USAA wasn't scared away.  However I had no HPs and my AAoA was around eight years at the time since I hadn't applied for anything in ages (I was convinced I would be turned down).

With only three 'toy' cards (the highest limit I had was Capital One, and the CL was $1700 IIRC) USAA approved me for $7k, which honestly knocked my socks off.  I was hoping for $500, and was planning to try for a secured if I was turned down for that.  Needless to say I was a happy camper.  Smiley Happy  (I still have that card; it's now at $12k, and I use it when they have BT promos.)

While I can't say for certain, this is one time where I feel having no HPs and a decent AAoA likely made the difference.

When you're ready to pull the trigger, USAA will be there.  Smiley Wink

Honestly my 54 point boost on TU yesterday and subsequent approval for the PayPal Cashback at $8K has pretty much finalized all of my credit acquisition goals, I just need to figure out if I am going to apply for the NFCU Amex or PC my CR so I have a 3% grocery card and then I have all of my bases covered except for Freedom and potentially Cash+

And if I get the PayPal business debit card and use that trick, 3% back on everything would dust all of my cards except Disco categories so I’m heavily leaning towards not doing that as I have carefully picked out the cards in my wallet.

Looking at USAA, they don’t have anything that fits my needs, everything is redundant to something I already have or offers things I don’t currently use.

But it’s still good to get the relationship started so it’s there if I ever do need it. Smiley Happy

Re: USAA Credit cards "Thank You For Your Interest..."

UnkaB failed to mention I was the Devil on his shoulder for that Limitless app. We got our Limitless CCs the same day! 😆

Also I had a foreclosure reporting when I got my first card with them. I thought for sure I'd be denied. Nope, instant approval! I got a CC, mortgage insurance and auto insurance the same day. That day was July 4! lol

When the time is right, I'd definitely join them. USAA is the cream of the crop in banking. Take it from someone who's had over 20 different banks as a customer. It doesn't get any better than them IMO.
Navy is great at doling out massive approvals in CCs, but the banking side isn't anything to write home about.

+1 to all of the above, with one small exception... @Gmood1 wasn't the devil on my shoulder, he was the angel since had I waited I would have missed out on one of my favorite cards!  Smiley Wink

I'll always be appreciative of the 'nudge' at just the right time!  Many thanks, my friend!  Smiley Very Happy  hihat.gif

I have heard that about NFCU which is why I am leery about leaving the comfort of FirstBank.

I will definitely check out USAA, I just have to be in the mood to make a phone call, but I have a feeling I am going to have to get my dad involved and I really don’t want to have to do that. He and I have a heavily strained relationship which is why I never even asked him about his discharge status when I went and signed up with NFCU and used my deceased grandfather’s status as retired AF instead.

I don’t think my grandfather was a USAA member though and even if he was, I would have to get my mom to join and my relationship with her is totally non-existent.

Before you worry too much about 'Plan B' and 'Plan C', give them a call to see what they can do.  Smiley Wink

There's no point in getting too worked up until you speak with them... FWIW I've personally found them always to be a pleasure to speak with, and I'm not crazy about the phone, either.
