You can order checks for Amex checking, but they're definitely not free - I think I paid just over $20 for two books of checks! 
(They're really nice looking checks, but at that price they should be.)
When viewing your checking account on the Amex dashboard, the link to order checks is on the right-hand side under, "Useful links." (Next to last option)
