Your grandfather doens't have to be a member, just eligible to be a member. My dad is a non-member vet, so I had to apply over the phone. They only asked for his name, how long he served (optional) and I was approved on the spot about a week ago.
The CSR did say that in the unlikely event that my account is flagged, I would have to provide a DD214 to prove that my sponsor served. She said this rarely happens, although I remember lots of threads about people getting their accounts frozen for security purposes.
And I had 5 or 6 inquiries on my TU and was approved for a card the same or next day I opened the account. They used TU for membership and CC, by the way. With your scores, you will definitely get the low APR but I'm not sure about income. They didn't ask me for POI and they have an internal scoring system, so YMMV.
I believe they approve household members, so if you know of any family members or friends who served or are members, I would do that instead.
As for banking, I like it so far. My cards havent come in yet (I applied over Memorial Day weekend), but I was able to complete a nice balance transfer online with no issues.
@Anonymous wrote:Hey gang! So, I wasn't going to apply for NFCU for awhile, but with the San Diego Chapter option out, my only viable option to get in would be through my veteran grandfather. The thing is, my side of the family doesn't sit well with my grandfather and we rarely communicate (terrible, I know), so, I have no way of knowing if he's even part of NFCU to give an access code. I, however, could call or go to a branch since he's technically eligible which says on the website I am as well, since I have one about 20 minutes away... Should I call or go inside?
@I'm mostly inquiring because I definitely want to start a banking relationship with them, since I see they have excellent customer service and fraud protection services, but I also wouldn't mind getting a Platinum @ 8.74% if possible. Since I'm in a CL growing stage, this might be a good opportunity. However, I have recently acquired some new cards in the last couple months so some stats:
Scores: 743 (EX); 745 (TU)** These may be outdated by a few weeks, so, will update asap
New accounts: 4 total between April and May
Inquiries: 4-5 roughly
Oldest account is 3 years old
Currently I have 5 credit cards
Income: College Student (15000) with total access up to 54,000 (income, parent income, grant/scholarships)
Util: 3-4%
I'm actually pretty satisfied with my line up, so wondering if gardening would be better, but I'd feel awful if I missed an opportunity with NFCU when I still have a chance. What would you do? Thanks!
If you have a branch that close by, if it were me I would simply stop by and have a chat in-person... I suspect it might be simpler than you think.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
I believe when I joined via my dad, I did it online and it only asked for his name and DOB. I did not need his access code, signature or approval. I told him I was doing it but NFCU did not ask for any information.
I joined last Friday night. I called their 800 number. My grandfather was in WWII. He's no longer with us and was never a member. They only asked what branch he was in. That's all they requested from me. I'm super impressed with them. They personally called me today to review my security settings on my account and to see if they could assist me further. I can't wait to transfer most, if not all of my banking to them.

Thanks for your info. Just adding a data point here: i have the same situation, called but they weren't willing to help without a DD214 form..

IMHO it's that good an outfit that you should seize upon any opportunity to join.
