I think *some* financial institutions need it, however, when I opened my Chase checking acount a little over a year ago they told me I didn't need to unfreeze it unless I wanted to open a credit card or initiate another loan application at the same time.  In the end I unfroze my Experian and they approved me for an account and a new CSP.

I categorically refuse to do AZEO!

They'll likely pull from Chex or EWS so assuming these aren't frozen there probably won't be an issue.

Having said that, I think there was a recent post from someone reporting Chase did an HP when they opened a checking account but I believe that to be an anomaly.   Also I don't think you can actually freeze EWS if I recall correctly.

Depends.... A while back, I tried to open a BOA checking account and was denied.  After sitting in the lounger for a couple of hours, wondering why I got denied, it came to me that my reports were all frozen.  I unfroze the reports, reapplied and was approved.  I think some banks are using this info to verify identity.
