Account number on Original creditor and collection agency are different !!

I just looked closely to my credit report and found out that the account # on the original creditor and the account # from collection agency are totally different on 3 credit report agencies. The amount of debt are the same, the open date are close. Is this legally for the collection agency to change the account number ?

This sounds strange to me. I would contact the CA's.

I sent the DV letter to the CA last week, have not heard anything back. But just found out today that the account # are totally different from the number on original creditor, but the debt amount is the same $$. Should I wait for the response from the CA on DV letter ? I dont wnat to contact CBAs to dispute it because I do not want to trigger and make a hint to the CA that they did report wrong account # and they will send the valid DV letter ? Am I thinking right ? any advise is greatly appreciate... thanks

I took your post in two different directions.  That would be:

  1. The OC and collection account are both listed under different account #'s on each credit report.  Not entirely uncommon as sometimes a file # or internal account is established when your account is sold.
  2. The OC and collection account have entirely different numbers on each individual report, for which they're posting invalid information and must either delete or correct.

That's my experience, at least, but ymmv with these clowns.
