Advice on older default CC

Hello everyone, thanks in advance for any help with my situation . Have been trying to rebuild my credit now that I’m older and need it.

-I got a Discover credit card (12/2010) when I was in my early 20’s to build my credit. Credit limit was $1000. I paid on time for a few years until I was laid off and didn’t make any more payments. Account was charged off (last payment 03/2015). CR says its $1,400 past due.

Fast forward a few years, I got a Capital One credit card 14 months ago ($600 limit) and have made on time payments every single month, paying off full balance.

My EX FICO score is 554 right now. Equifax score is 606. I have nothing on collection and no other debt or CC’s. I feel an obligation to pay back my charged off account and want my credit to improve as well. Should I just call and pay full balance? Negotiate? How long before I get a good credit score. Any advice or tips appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Advice on older default CC

Paying it off would help a lot. Then it would say PIF and not settled for less than amount owed. Which would look better to future creditors. But the lates that go with it that led to the CO will hurt the full 7 yrs. Usually a CO hits after 180 days late. If you only have 1 card. You need 3 cards and a loan for the rebuild FICO bonus. But I'd hold off on applying until Disco is paid and reflects that on your reports. Then seek more revolvers slowy as you rebuild. Welcome to the forums.

Thanks for the reply! Will call tomorrow and Pay in Full. Im guessing its rare they will remove it from credit report altogether correct? Removing it completely will probably lower my score because of credit history right? Thanks again!

Yeah Disco isnt known to be that generous. But they will let you back in around a year or so out. They dont blacklist you like others do. So you could be back in with them in time. Good luck! Lets us know when the 0 hits and we'll lead you into rebuilding some more.

Re: Advice on older default CC

Thank you FireMedic1! Made the payment in full today. Called Discover and they transferred me to a collection agency. How long does it usually take to update on my report? How long after it zeroes out till I apply for new CC and which type? Thanks for all the help, feel much better eliminating this old debt.

Re: Advice on older default CC

Will probably take a good 30 days at least to update. I'd wait at least 3-6 months after it updates to give it some time to age.

Re: Advice on older default CC

Ok thank you will update when they 0 it. I read a few other posts on here and saw the advice of asking OC to recall the debt. Did I mess up by paying the CA? Discover was the one that transferred me to them, didnt even ask if they could recall it.

Re: Advice on older default CC

Nah if Discover already CO'd it and the balance on their reporting is zero, they already sold it to a CA and will have nothing further to do as far as negotiating. Recalling the debt with the OC is generally done for medical collections or wireless cellphone bill/internet/cable collections.
