I pulled my Equifax report through this site 2 months ago and discovered a collection item (for a very small $ amount) from May of 2008. I called the CA to request more info on it but was never sent anything. They didn't have any of my correct contact info, which is why I hadn't heard from them until I pulled my report, but I voluntarily gave them my current phone # and address. I got a few of their automatic collection calls over a period of a few days but that was it.
I have since drafted a PFD letter to send to them, but it hasn't gone out yet.
Pulled my Equifax report today (again through this site) and it's nowhere on the report.
Any idea as to why? Now I'm afraid to send a PFD letter because I don't want it to show back up.

Several things to address here....
Never call a CA!
Never ever give them information about you...EVER.
Never offer to pay if you haven't had a CA verified!
They may have run scared knowing they cannot validate this debt. Take that PFD letter & shred it. Watch your reports & if they ever (or another similar collection) show up on your report again, draft a DV letter & send it CMRRR. (check the abbreviation link in my sig block if you need to)
And lastly, when sending correspondance to a CA....never ever SIGN it. Print only.
Ok, so....besides all that...welcome to the forums!!!!
If anything else shows up...drop a line here, we won't steer ya wrong!
