Collections Question

At the beginning of November, our local cable company in Sacramento sent me to collections for a past due bill of $74.00.  I had no idea I owed this money, or I would have paid it.  I had a balance due when I moved from one rental home to another and just assumed that the balance would be added to my next bill.  Apparently, it wasn't.  By the time I realized this, it was already sent to collections.  I paid the past due bill today, but since it was already sent to collections at the beginning of the month, I'm wondering how much this will hurt my credit score.  Currently, my EQ is 617 (that's the only one I know).  And, once the CA reports that this account is now paid in full, will my score go back up?  I was hoping to buy a home in the spring (if DPA is reinstated). Thanks.

Re: Collections Question

Sorry to tell you, but a paid collection and a unpaid collection affects your score the same. FICO don't much care about the status, just the fact you have a collection.

Who did you pay? If you paid the OC, then the CA should be removed as you don't have an account with them.

The only thing you can do if you paid the CA is send GW letters. Since you paid so soon, they may go ahead and delete for you.

Have you confirmed that it has been reported, a lot of CA will give you 30 days before they report.

Re: Collections Question

Well I paid the CA since they were the ones that sent me the notice.  And per their notice, they did give me a 30 day notice, and they did send it to collections.  I'll go ahead and write the GW letter and hope for the best.

Do you have any idea how much my FICO score will drop because of this?  Approximately?

Re: Collections Question

Have you confirmed that it is reporting on your reports?

As for the score change, that can vary depending on what is one your reports now. It could have from little effect to 100 points.

Re: Collections Question

I haven't actually confirmed by speaking directly with someone, I'm just assuming they did because their letter dated 11/7/08 said that they will be reporting to all 3 CAs since it has been over 30 days since their first notification.

As far as what's reporting now on my CR, I filed bankruptcy in August 2005 and I have one late from a student loan last March, other than that, good credit reporting of a car loan and 6 credit cards.
