When I started rebuilding my credit the first thing that I did was dispute a collection which stated that it was sold by ATT to ERC. It was for $172 and I had no idea what it was for. I disputed both with Experian and Transunion and after a few days each CRA deleted the collection. Fast forward to a month or so later and I receive a letter from ERC with the bill for U-Verse which I had previously had with my ex, (it was in my name). She was going to handle the returning of the equipment when I moved and it looks like that never happened. I am perfectly willing to pay the $172 at this point however I am curious how this will work out now that the collection has been successfully disputed.
If I call ERC and pay them will they then send the data to the CRA's that it is a paid collection and it will newly go on my report? I looked them up on the forums and from what I can tell they do not PFD so I'm guessing they won't be too helpful in this department.
If I ignore it however I'm going to assume that they will send then same data to the CRAs (which they may have already done) to get it reported newly, does anyone here have a similar experience? I'm assuming that I am being too hopeful that once something is successfully disputed it stays that way but just wanted to check.

Update: Instead of contacting ERC I just called ATT directly and made it to the collections department who happily accepted payment in full for the old bill. Am I correct in assuming that if ERC does try and put the collection back on my credit reports (which they may or may not do) I can dispute it's validity by showing payment in full to the original creditor?

While they may not pfd, if they haven't put it back on your reports already, they may be willing to come to an agreement of paying for not reporting it.

Successfully disputed is actually not quite as binding as you would think. For example, if you dispute and it gets removed from your credit, the furnisher can report it any time they want to. The legal requirement is that if you dispute with the CRAs and something is removed as a result, the furnisher must notify you within 5 days of the disputed entry's reinsertion onto your reports. A successful dispute does not actually impose any bar on collection or re-reporting of the account. Sometimes, a debt collector will choose to remove an entry simply out of immediate convenience and revisit the matter at a later time, once they have had additional time to research or to get documentation.
Okay thank you, that makes sense. I will call them and pay, hopefully they will agree to not newly report it.
Updated, hopefully ERC doesn't try to resend the collection to the CRAs but we shall see.
