I just settled a collection account with Credit One LLC. They said they do not do pay for deletes, but once my report updates to paid and shows a $0 balance, I can dispute the account to have the collection removed. They said they don't act on disputes for paid accounts. My questions are, what should I dispute as? Does it matter? Do I have to dispute separately with all 3 bureaus? Are online disputes faster than by mail?
thank you!!

If they don't reply and they're telling you the truth, it shouldn't really matter what the dispute says because if they don't reply, it falls off at the conclusion of the lawful period for a creditor reply.
The reason they won't pay for delete is that it violates their TOS with the bureaus. If it's on your report, it's supposed to stay there if it's true. If they get back in and actively delete it, it probably *is* different than "Didn't reply, so it falls off."
Either way, you did pay it, so I would lodge a dispute now and pick the closest thing that sounds about right and see if they told you the truth. You'll know in about 30 days or less.
Also, yes, you file disputes with all three bureaus otherwise it just falls off (or changes to match the facts) on the ones you disputed. They don't tell each other.
Yes, online disputes are faster than the mail. The mail takes at least 5-7 business days to get there, usually, and then someone at the bureau has to get around to opening it. The 30 day window starts as soon as you click submit on an online dispute.
Disputing over the phone also works well sometimes. I had the guy from Equifax deleting things that were not true about me as we spoke on the phone, then he told me to log out and back in, and they were all gone and my FICO score shot up over 20 points.
I wonder if you can just dispute the collection and request documentation proving its validity. If no documentation is provided within the necessary time (90 days?) to the CRA(s) the collection is removed.
You could try to ask Credit One what to dispute, since they seem forthcoming. I guess the accuracy/status of the tradeline? But you’ll definitely need to do it separately with all three bureaus.
Currently dealing with them now! Did they challenge the dispute? I've spoken with them and was told the same thing as well.
Update: I disputed with one bureau as soon as my balance updated and it was removed from all of them! I now have all collections off of my report finally
Would you mind sharing what percentage of your debt they accepted for your settlement? Did you just call or send a letter? I have a $4K collection with them I would like to clear as well. Thank you!
