Debt in Collections, within SOL, any options?

I have two debts in collections, one for $4,233 and one for $1,690 that are both currently in collections by Portfolio Recovery.  (They are both reporting on EQ as open accounts, 120+ late, not collections, btw.)  DOLAs are 04/06 and 03/06, respectively.  Both are, I believe, still within the SOL.  I cannot PIF, but could possibly make monthly payment arrangements.  From what I've been reading here and elsewhere, this CA is no pleasure to work with.

The backstory is: These are my bad.  Of all the negatives on my reports, these are the only ones that I take complete responsibility for. The OC is Aaron's Rent to Own (scumbags in their own right).  I was leasing some stuff from them when I had to leave town due to serious threats from my ex.  At the time, the last thing on my mind was whether these guys would be able to recover their over priced merchandise, or how I would pay them.  I guess I figured that they would just repossess the goods and that was that, as I wasn't obligated to complete the purchase per my contract.  Now, as to exactly *what* transpired after I left, I can't say.  They may have come by to repossess and my ex greeted them at the gate with an AR-15.  Wouldn't be the first time.

Question is; what is the best way to handle this?  Should I contact the CA and try to work out something to pay them off or settle, then GW them to death once it's paid?  Or is it better to leave it alone as it's still under SOL? I've never been contacted by them (not sure I want to be, LOL!) and I don't want to set myself up for a judgement.  Any advice is appreciated.

My advice would be to first check your state statutes and be certain if these are within SOL or not and find out for certain when SOL will expired.

They are, SOL will expire on 08/11.  That's 6 years for written agreements in NM, DOFD would be 08 of 05.  I'm assuming that a rent-to-own contract applies as a written agreement, just like a purchase would.
Should I just wait it out?
