Deployed and Need Help

Good morning,

My names Daniel and I've been looking on this site for help in regards to my current situation. I've noticed you're very knowledgable on the subject of credit. I'll try and keep this short!

I am currently deployed overseas with the USAF in a remote location with little access to phone or Internet. I charged something on my credit card and completely forgot about it due to not receiving any notification via mail or email. Today I noticed my credit score dropped from a 798 to a 702 over night. I paid the bill last week thinking nothing of it. I have 8 credit cards and have made 272 payments on time except this one incident!

I emailed the CEO of USAA today about my situation in hopes they can fix it. They have informed me that they are looking over my case as we speak. ( I wrote them a goodwill letter as recommended on this site)

Any extra suggestion from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I really have worked hard for good credit and plan on buying property when I get home. I don't want this to mess it up.

I look forward to hearing from everyone. .

Apologies in advance for the sloppy email had to type on my phone!

Thanks again everyone for your time

Daniel

Hi Rizzo,

First, thank you for your service. Second, I found this but I'm not sure how it might affect your situation. Either way, good luck and stay safe.

Re: Deployed and Need Help

One more bit of information. I also got charged normal Intrest rate. I am under title 10 US orders right now. Technically speaking they were suppose to charge me 6% due to me falling under the federal law of 6% cap on interest rates for active duty members being deployed. With that being said would this be a good dispute if my GW letter does not go through. They charged me the wrong Intrest rate.

Obviously I'm no expert, but I think you might have a good chance at a dispute. But it may just wind up being a refund of the difference in interest rates. It's USAA which is a military style bank, so Im sure they have provisions. Anyway off to work, have an awesome day.

Re: Deployed and Need Help

If they are billing you at an incorrect interest rate, I would file a dispute under the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) as opposed to the FCRA.

However, your issue with having been late is not related to the issue of the proper interest rate, and would not be a basis for requiring removal of the late from your credit report.

I would pursue that matter via a GW request to higher management.

An email may not be get it done, while a phone call might bear fruit.

Perhaps you have someone in the states with a power of attorney who can make such calls on your behalf?

Re: Deployed and Need Help

Thanks Robert.

The reason I got billed the wrong rate is because the did not apply FCRA and I could mention that when filling out my dispute under the FCBA. Right ? Thus making me under the impression my payment was different?

Also the GW letter went straight to the CEO Parker I got his email somehow. My mother has a power of power of attorney so if I don't hear back via email I will have her call.
