I had put together the GW Success and Examples thread found stickied in here and found many success stories of GWing lates on closed accounts. However, I also found a high number of horror stories of the OC deleting the account entirely (vs. only the lates) after receiving a GW request. Certainly be careful. If the account is among your oldest accounts and/or older than AAoA you could lose points if a GW is sent.
