Re: Doing the right thing even though I didn't have to.

They cant report the debt anymore, that ship has sailed. My primary concern would only be the SOL.  I know he seemed nice an understanding but collectors have a tendency of saying whatever it takes to get money.  Congrats on the good feeling of taking care of an old debt though.

Re: Doing the right thing even though I didn't have to.

I've been thinking along the same lines (less the Christian mind set). However, I am torn about one CA on my CR. I believe the account was added to my CR in violation of the reporting rules as it is at least 7 years, if not 10 years past the DoFD. I sent a DV and am still waiting for a response. The amount is pretty small and I COULD struggle a bit in order to pay it off but I am annoyed that they reported this to my credit years later. And the dates on the accounts are funny to me. It feels very underhanded and I don't like feeling like I'm being taken advantage of or preyed upon. I had some money this month and decided to pay a CO that was about 1.5 times the amount of this CA instead. What to do?!? Pay it off and ask for PFD to save myself the headache and CR blemish or fight the good fight and investigate the matter further trying to force their hand to abide by the reporting rules?

Absolutely dispute the misreporting.

Just keep in mind though, whether they can legally report still or not does not make the debt go away. The debt remains a debt until paid no matter how many years its been. You've just got to ask yourself whether or not you want to spend who knows how long constantly having collection attempts on this debt or do you want to just pay it (if its really yours) and be done with it for good. I choose the latter.

Re: Doing the right thing even though I didn't have to.

I think I am going to put the money together but just hold on to it while I fight to have it removed from my CR. After it is removed, I'll be happy to pay it. I just hate the idea of paying it and asking for PFD when they had no legal right to report it this many years later.

Very nice! Your Credit Karma will thank you for that! (I don't mean the Web site, LOL)

Yeah I'm actively engaged in a similar situation myself. I believe the debt is legit, but I have documented evidence of misreporting and failure to notify. I'm also going to hold this over their heads and threaten to report to the BBB, AG, FTC and anyone else I can think of. I'm mean come on, all I'm asking for is a delete but they're refusing. Maybe after I threaten them a bit they'll realize that the headache of being involved in an investigation is not worth it when all they have to do is simply delete like I'm requesting.
