I was surprised to see a collection account reported by Enhanced Recover Company (ERC) on two of my credit reports. I didn't recognize the account and had not previously been contacted about it. The original creditor was AT&T and I suspected a billing error had occurred after I closed my cell phone account with them.
I called ERC, stated repeatedly that I did not recognize the account, and requested that they send me a letter verifying the debt. I checked my mailbox for a week and didn't receive anything. After doing some more reading on these forums, I called again and asked whether they owned the reported debt or were collecting on AT&T's behalf. The representative informed me that ERC did not own the debt and had "sent it back" to AT&T earlier this week.
I then logged in to file a dispute with the credit bureaus that had reported the account, but to my surprise the account had already been removed from both! I also called AT&T to PIF (despite believing the charge to be in error) because the amount was small and I wanted to prevent it from showing up again on my reports. I'm pleasantly surprised that a single phone call was enough to remove an account I was so worried would haunt me for 7 years.
Congrats! Thats how its done!
