Re: Help...feeling rather defeated today.

I disputed because it included a 90 day late from last year that I know to be untrue. I have 4 loans with them that all have the same terms and were all in forebearance at the same time. There is no way this one loan should have a 90 day late mark on it. Especially because there was never a 30 day or 60 day on there before that. So this tradeline didn't look quite so positive to me. When I called and asked the about it the CSR told me to dispute it because based on the records she was seeing, she couldn't figure out what the 90 day late would be there either.

I dont think anyone outside of FICO knows how the disputes affect score, I had some hurt me and others help.

The balance increase definelty looks suspect to me. Think about it, a balance increase on an account would *seemingly* imply nonpayment and /or additional credit line use?

My understanding is that SL in deferrment still acrue interest.

My question is why are you disputing a positive tradeline?

Because of the incorrect late payments, it seems.

Yeah, I caught that when re-reading the original message, and edited my reply.

I think both Deferrment and Forebearance mixed with Dispute would indicate inability to pay for ***some*** reason which would be viewed negatively no?

Not really.  What matters is that the account is being paid as agreed.  The creditor has to agree to deferrment and forbearance.

My suggestion is to take a breath and stop watching the FICO score and alerts like a hawk. Sometimes you'll take two steps forward, three steps back, or vice versa. Think of the overall picture instead of the immediate picture. If you have a dispute for a 90 day late that is illegitimate, it makes sense to address it. Whatever the reason for the drop, it is likely short term and your score will continue to rise over time. The inexplicable drops happen to me, too, and I'm sure to everyone that is rebuilding. Sometimes the trend is not a perfect upward line. Keep doing what you're doing, focus on addressing baddies and paying everything on time, and you'll get to where you want to be.

Patience is the hardest part of this journey, but we didn't wreck our credit in a couple of months, so we won't fix it in a couple of months either.

Re: Help...feeling rather defeated today.

Thank you for that sage advice. It is much appreciated. Perhaps I should unsubscribe from alerts for now. They have indeed been driving me crazy with every little bitty change. A 20 point drop just seemed so drastic to me.

Re: Help...feeling rather defeated today.

From going through some similar disputes myself, all I can say is your score will bounce around like a ping pong ball while disputes are active.

Don't worry about it. When the dispute ends, then the score will 'true-up'.

Disputes have a strange way of affecting scores, mostly in ways that simply can't be understood by anyone with common sense. The truth is though, for the short time you are in a dispute (couple of months max), it really doesn't matter. Whether it goes up, down or sideways while the dispute is active isn't as relevant as what happens when the dispute ends.

Getting a 90 day late off is a good thing and will improve your score. Filing a dispute about a 90 day late can cause other unrelated scoring issues and decrease your score.

Its hard to see your score drop when you are actively working on improving it. Just know it will happen frequently, usually leaving you to scratch your head as to why, but those points almost always come back as mysteriously as they vanished. I know, I went through that agony, actually still am, but my scores finally stopped bouncing around so much.

My understanding is that SL in deferrment still acrue interest, though a dollar change is kind of odd. Possibly the result of rounding - perhaps they left off the change in previous reporting.

But I doubt thats the reason for the drop - more likely is the dispute flag.

Not sure if relevant to the discussion... a SL in deferment does not acrue interest during the deferment period, however interest does acrue during forbearance.

you can ask for deferment if you are in school more than x number of credits(more than half-time I think), in the service or active duty, or can prove economic hardship such as lack of work or unemployed. Forebearance is for when you don't qualify for deferment... need money for medical expenses, car repairs, lost too much in Vegas, etc...
