Complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will get it removed and probably removed quickly too.

The reason why I ask if it's legit is bc I have been told a few diff things , number one they don't have to contact you prior to reporting to CRA , but they do have to send out a letter and give you 30 days to validate or dispure which I never got . Also this would be a 2 year old debt yet , it has a new date of Dec 16 listed on the credit bureau .
I'm thinking that makes it a complaint. Some of the more experienced folks will chime in.
@aduke, glad to hear it was removed!
IMHO, utilities have a way of appearing on CR again and again. Personally, I would speak to the credit manager as planned and tell them what happened. I would explain that you would never miss a payment and if there is an outstanding balance, you will get it paid immediately and see if you can send the payment to their attention. I would then tell them that you will check in with them in a few days to make sure they received the final payment. Building rapport at this point can't hurt. When following up; ask if they could just shoot you a quick email stating that the balance is PIF, nothing is owed and there is no delinquency. Then you can save that final proof of payment.
If the 'collection' pops up again, you'll have immediate proof that there isn't a debt owed.
Hope you have a good weekend
