Have you contacted your insurance to ensure they shouldn't be covering the difference? A lot of times people assume the doctors/hospitals and insurance companies have done all they're supposed to in regard to settling a payment for medical issues when the reality is they may not have. A lot of doctors will submit claims with incorrect/incomplete information and the insurance companies will deny back to the doctor. Rather than fix their mistake, the doctor just expects the patient to pay.
I would urge you to contact both your insurance company and your husband's to see if there's anything that can be done. Sometimes--sometimes--good insurance companies will pay whatever amount is owed once they know one of their members is being taken to collections for a debt that the doctor was too lazy/negligent to file a proper claim to the insurance company for in the first place.

Most hospitals have some sort of charity care or clinics if you need to see a doctor. The charity care is based on your income and assets at time of hospitalization and the clinic is usually in the hospital with the same doctors of the hospital who volunteer their time and the pay for doctors visits is on a sliding scale. So if you were hospitalized and didnt have insurance it can be partially or completly paid for by charity care.
I know we get lost in the credit mode but frankly you could have an 800+ and that doesnt mean anything if you dont have your health.
