How do I handle this? Collections issue

So I have been working on my husband's credit. We have done all we can do (besided goodwill them to death- but since I just sent my first round of letters this week I guess I should wait before sending more Smiley Wink ) So I pulled up my disaster of a credit report. I noticed on collection item was from a local urgent care. I know it is my debt but was pretty sure I paid the account with the orgnial creditor when I went to urgent care with my son and they told me I had a balance. Anyways- it was such a low balance I planned on calling the collection agency and seeing if the debt was still valid and if I could pay and get it deleted. Well... the collection agency this debt is with is no longer in business. Now what?!

Dispute with the CRA would be my geuss. Should be an automatic removal.

Thanks, that is what I thought but was making sure there wasn't a better option since if I didn't pay it- I do actually owe it.

Re: How do I handle this? Collections issue

I would claim the debt was paid at time of service and never should have gone to collections. Since the original reporting CA is kaput, there's no way to validate it. THere is always the possibility it may pop up again with a different CA - a lot of times the debts that defunct CA's hold is bought by other CA's. But the likelyhood of another CA being able to validate in the future is relatively low. Reason being - the number one reason for failure of a CA is poor recordkeeping and shoddy practices.
