How many revolving accounts should I have?

I'm in the process of repairing my credit and so far I've had 9 collections paid and removed from my credit report. I've had one Capital One card for a year now, with a perfect payment history and a limit of $1,000, the balance always reports between 90-110.00. The highest balance occured once for $656 when I made a large purchase at Best Buy.  Three collections remain on my report, but they will be removed once they receive my payment. I have two 60 day lates from a furniture loan back in 2008 (it's paid and closed). My last bad mark is another furniture store that is appearing as derogatory/closed/chargeoff because I made the last payment after it went to collections. The last payment was for $41.

I'm trying to purchase a used vehicle in late November/Early December. Nothing fancy, I'm looking at a 2008/9 Kia Sorento or a 2011 Kia Forte.

I have been pre-approved for a Capital One Journey student card, BBVA Compass Optimizer Card, and an HSBC/Orchard Bank Classic Card. I currently bank with BBVA Compass, Capital One, and USAA.

I would appreciate any info you can give me.

Thanks!

Re: How many revolving accounts should I have?

If the car loan is important, I vote to wait on getting any new CCs, though if I had an offer from USAA I might be tempted. Adding new CCs (or any account) can have a negative effect on your FICO scores but much of  the damage typically will fade by 6 mo. and they rest by a year. Adding a new CC now will mean that it will likely report starting in Aug, and likely September when the statement cuts. I'd be afraid that most of the damage will be there come car app time.

Ideally 3 or so revolving & charge TLs are good. Adding any more will very likely result in a loss.
