@daveg38 I didn't owe that much so I paid it all at once and opened my checking/savings back immediately. I was able to go back online the same day

Did they give you your membership number to log in with when you started making payments?

@daveg38 I only made 1 $500 payment and I opened my account back the same day. I already knew my membership # and knew my online log in

Your access number will be the same. I just had to make a new login to get in online. Online will NOT show the charged off accounts. It's best to call and get everything set up. Good luck!

Re: How to Approach NFCU Regarding Paying BK'd Debt

So a bit of an update.

Called the BK department, they didn't seem interested in telling me how much I needed to pay off to get a CC, only that I am good to go on checking and savings.

Got transferred to member services, opened my checking and savings with $200 (put the bulk in savings). I will probably direct deposit my occasional Upwork earnings there.

Applied for their Cash Rewards (green card), auto decline without a pull. Same with a $500 CLOC. Nobody will tell me diddly squat as to why.

Tried calling lending services, BK department and even member services wouldn't clarify why, how much I owe, or how to get the “Your account information is being provided for informational purposes only. Providing you this information is not an attempt to collect a debt.” message removed.

I will wait for the decline letter, and go from there.

It's going to say you caused them a loss. They will not extend credit to you until you pay them back. You may want to try writing to the board of directors. You can even reach out to them on Facebook. Supposedly, they have a special team working with the social media team to get issues resolved. I mean, it makes sense to get something public resolved quickly.

You have to pay them back in full to get another credit card.

OP knows that. It seems NFCU's BK/lending department refuses to work with him to get it resolved, however.

OP, perhaps try calling again and trying a different approach? Don't mention wanting to apply for a CC. Simply say you wish to pay them back in full, make them whole again, and to that end, how much do you owe and how can you pay them back. Try asking for a supervisor to tell that to.

The way @OmarGB9 laid it out is the perfect way to get this done. I have learned that it all depends on who picks up my call. Even though it is a drag to call back, the next person may be totally helpful. Taking care of their loss and not mentioning any new products is a great strategy. A couple of bumps so far but you'll get this worked out. Fingers crossed for a quick resolution and I'm waiting for your next update!! Smiley Wink

Re: How to Approach NFCU Regarding Paying BK'd Debt

Talked to a different representative over at the BK Department.

Got their address to mail payments, got my owed balance, and was told that all flags would be cleared upon successful payment of the debt, which is just under $5,700.

The lady told me I could pay as much as I wanted to, as often as I wanted to, but that I was under no pressure to do so (she has to say that as saying anything else would imply I owe a debt, which would violate the automatic stay).

The future looks bright.  Smiley Happy
