How to Handle Collection Items..1 step at a time

Ok..after a few months of lurking and reading and reading and lurking...I'm finally ready to take the plunge. Since my DH is in worst shape than I, we'll start with his CR collection items. I would like to know what to do about each one in terms of DV, PFD, HIPPA (if applies), etc.

1. One CR says NCO and another says Inphynet South Broward as the collector. The OC is Inphynet as it is a medical bill that shoulkd have been paid by insurance but the most recent correspondence is from NCO offering a settlement so I'm not sure who to take this up with. Anyway, the date open 1/2009; balance date 4/2009; balance amount $489; date of status (they have nothing there), status account seriously past due.

2. One CR says ATT Bellsouth and another CR says CBCS has this account. It's from the last bill we had from Bellsouth after we moved. Date open 2/2009, balance date 4/2009, balance amount $126, date of status 4/2009, status account serioulsy past due.

3. One CR says Lexington Health Service and the other says Receivable Solutions. The last correspondence I received was August 08 and it was from Lexington. Although i also have one from July 08 from Receivable. Date open 7/2008, balance date 4/2009, balance amount $151, date of status 4/2009, status Automated Account.

4. Ditto # 3; except balance amount $139.

5. One CR says NCO MEDCLR and another says Inphynet South Broward as the collector. The OC is Inphynet as it is a medical bill that shoulkd have been paid by insurance. Date open 6/2008; balance date 4/2009; balance amount $402; date of status 2/2009, status at least 120 days or more/account seriously past due.

6. Ditto #5...except Date open 11/2008

7. Ditto #5...except Date open 8/2008

Again all of the medicals should have been paid by insurance but at this point I'm not sure who to call/write to handle the issue of paying and removing from CR.

Same thing goes for phone collection acct. Should I be pulling the CR from a specific place to get accurate details or does every CR service have it's own "version" of my credit history. I used BoA's Privacy assist to pull one and MyCreditHealth to pull the other....I'm so confused so a Mod's help (or anybody for that matter) would be much appreciated.

This is just part one so stay tuned...

Medical collections are done differently than normal collections.  Look up and follow the HIPPA process exactly as stated.  If you have any questions just post back.  The OC and one CA can report on any given account.

2. One CR says ATT Bellsouth and another CR says CBCS has this account. It's from the last bill we had from Bellsouth after we moved. Date open 2/2009, balance date 4/2009, balance amount $126, date of status 4/2009, status account serioulsy past due.

Those dates do not mean a lot.  You need to know the DOFD of the account.  Is it still within SOL?

Same as #1 - Follow the HIPPA process

4. Ditto # 3; except balance amount $139.

HIPPA process

CR should be pulled directly from the CRAs.  They have the most accurate information on them.  You can get a free one from each CRA by going to

https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp.

OK so do I still do the HIPPA letter if insurance should have paid? Who do I contact, OC or CA, to take care of bill? Who's responsible for delete once/if insurance picks up bill?

I have exhausted my ability to pull free CR from CRA's through annualcreditreport until 8/09. I thought I could pull if I was denied credit or employment but I can't seem to find how to do that. I've done it before but can't backtrack for some reason. Will keep trying though..

Re: How to Handle Collection Items..1 step at a time

If you have your Experian report number from when you pulled your reports before, you can go to their website and towards the bottom in the middle it will say "review report again", click that and enter your report number and other information and you'll see a current copy.

Otherwise go to TransUnion's online dispute and go through the steps to get a report to use for disputing. You don't actually have to complete a dispute, but can view your report.

If you've been denied credit in the last 60 days, are unemployed, and under some other circumstances you can get a free report from the CRA. If it is for denial of credit, you get a report from the CRA the creditor used.

Call your insurance company and see if they paid the bills, then contact OC to confirm or to see if they even billed the insurance in the first place, or if insurance denied the claims.

Once you find out the answers to these questions then you can get better help.

Re: How to Handle Collection Items..1 step at a time

To discuss the med collections, I split this thread and the discussion can continue here . There should be no more posts in this thread discussing med collections. Discussions on non-med collections are fair game though. Thank you!
