My old First Premier account is reporting that I opened it in 9/08. My last date of activity was either 10/08 or 12/08 depending on which CR you look at. However, they were still reporting payment status' in 2012?! No way that account wasn't charged off before then. Am I just not interpretting this correctly? On Equifax it says I was 90 plus days late December 2008, May 2011, and Aug 2012. My Transunion report shows 0 lates charged off. Experian shows 90 plus days late February 2010, December 2010, August 2012, October 2012. Is it me or is that inconsistant?
What is the DOFD listed on the bureaus for the account? Is there a DOFD listed?

Date of First Delinquency. It should be marked as DOFD on your credit report, you may not find this date on some of the reports you get around the internet, you may have to go directly to the bureaus to find this date, but it will be the DOFD. It basically means the date that you missed the first payment that led to the charge off of the account. You need to see what the bureaus are listing for this.
It is very typical for the three bureaus to have conflicting information. The only way that you could find out for sure (if the are honest) is to contact the original creditor and ask them for the DOFD.
I should have mentioned that this is where the credit reporting time period begins. Figure the 7 year mark starts from the DOFD date.
While they are required by law to charge off an account after 180 of delinquency, there is nothing that says they must report the charge off to the CRAs. As long as it remains unpaid its 90+ days delinquent. Being charged off does not change that.
Inconsistent does not necessarily equal inaccurate. There is no requirement for the exact same derogs be reported accross all three bureaus.
Having said that, have you actually pulled your free reports from annualcreditreport.com to see what the different CRA's say about the DoFD and estimated fall off date? This info is stripped out of reports when viewed on third party site like this one and CK.
Ok let me check my bureau reports. I didn't find that date on my mFICO report nor Credit Karma. They all report charged off. The dates of days late are all different across the board though.
Ok I found it. DoFD for Equifax is 12/08. DoFD for Transunion is 11/08. Shouldn't those two dates be the same? And why were they still reporting lates way in 2012 as if the account was still open? It was obviously charged off long before.
Sometimes they don't match up exactly. Has to do with how/when the actual reporting is done. Just ask for early exclusion with TU next month, and request early exclusion with EX and EQ at 2-3 months early.
A charge-off is an accountng measure that does prevent contnued reoorting of increased delinquency.
A creditor will often cease reporting of any additonal monthly delinquencies after reporting a charge-off, and sometimes not report any monthly delinquencies, and be content with onyr reporting of the CO. As stated by Norman, they are not required to be consistent between CRAs, They are required only to be accurate in what they re[ort
DOFD is a bit different, as it is required reporting if the creditor has reported by charge-off or a debt collector has reported a collection.
DOFD is also a factual date-certain, and thus cannot vary between CRAs.
Inconsistency in reported DOFDs between CRAs is disputable, as one must be inaccurate by definition.
Credtiors are not required to report when they acutally took a CO, It is not material to credit scoring, and only the fact that they took that accountng measure is reported, not their date of doing that bookeeping. However taking of a CO does trigger the requirement to report the DOFD to the CRA within 90 days after reporintof the CO.
