How to tell if account went into collections or not?

I know this may be a silly question, but I thought one of my older credit accounts (2 1/2 years ago w/Cap One, has been paid off and closed since) was in collections, however I don't remember ever being contacted by any collections agency, and the account on my CRs don't say anything about collections, just that the account went 150 days deliquent. Would my CR explicitly mention it? Thanks in advance!

Not necessarily. If they are reporting a 0 balance then they have sold the debt to a JDB. If they are still reporitng a balance I would be contacting them to make settlement arrangements before they send it off to a CA. They may tell you they sent it to a CA if they did and they refuse to work a settlement with you then ask who the CA is and contact them to make settlement arrangements before they report it.

Re: How to tell if account went into collections or not?

Hi gdale6,

Well the balance is $0 because I paid it off in full. All 3 CRs report a $0 balance and that the account was paid/closed. So is there any other way I could tell if it went to collections or not? Thanks again!

No there isnt any way short of calling the creditor to ask but its a moot point at this time since you paid it all off. If a paid collection shows up then you would know it was sent to collections but its highly unlikely they would report a paid collection as it costs them money to do so.

Yeah I called earlier and it was like they were having trouble finding the information... on another note, I'm thinking of investing in real estate in Jan 2016 ($20,000 - $50,000 homes/condos/apartments) do you think that with my credit scores I could do so? I know my scores are gonna increase from now till them but considering the 2 1/2 year old derog... will they factor that in? My credit report is otherwise clean, I have 5 accounts open all in good standing paid in full every month. I would like to put down 10-15% (I know 20% I'd preferred but...) so do you think I could get a good APR? I projected that my scores will be in the 700s by then, especially because the TU jumped a few points yesterday and my reports haven't been updated with my payments on my student loan and credit card yet. Thanks!
