Just to keep it short, I received a call from JCS (Jefferson Capital Systems) stating I owe a balance from a payapal account that belong to a business account yet they dont have that business info and only my personal info (minus the personal address and personal email). I am no longer apart of that business and cant find any contact up to date contact info regarding the business or the current owner of it. They (JCS) said they cant contact paypal about it since they bought the debt and when I contacted paypal they only referred me to JCS. Idk how to proceed from here they have incomplete information regarding a business account belonging to a business that im not apart of. The first representative and first supervisor I spoke to was rude and kept trying to speak over me. Second supervisor was more patient but pretty much kept telling me that they had no other information. I would request a DV but im afraid providing personal information would only allow them to update something that isnt true. I almost want to just settle it but I feel that is a waste of money on something I dont owe but dont want this appearing on my CR and ruining my credit (I know even if they appear and are removed, creditors will panic and start AA my accounts and I dont want to go through that). Should I fight this with a DV? I know they are barred from collection until they do validate the debt and send it to me if I did request a DV but once they send that info where to proceed from there? Do I contact the FTC/CFPB? PP is no help and JCS is no help. I can provide proof that im not apart of that business but without them evening having the business information on record, it probably would be useless unless I show that the info they have (business email and business address) is tied to the business, but even then it might just be like trying to push a straw through a brick wall. I honestly dont know if this even fraud related and almost ready to file a police report and put a fraud alert on my reports only out of panic. I honestly am stuck and at this point feel settling for something I dont own or owe is the only option to prevent it from appearing on my credit reports and want to know if there is any advice out there. I wouldve posted this in the business section but considering this is a more personal matter I felt this thread would be better but if a mod feels that it should be moved that is fine.

Were you a part of the business during the time the debt was accrued? Because you did say you were once a part of the business. I am mot sure how business debt works, but I would assume you cannot get out of owing it if you did rack up this debt (not saying it is a lot, you did not say) and then left the business, otherwise I am sure this is a loophole that many would take advantage of. Did you have a PayPal card/account while you were with this business and make charges on it? Again, not sure how it works, so maybe someone else will come along and know better.

Yes I was apart of the business (was a cofounder) however this was a business paypal account (owned by a corporation) that had no PG and based on what I was told sounds like it was a negative balance from paypal. There was no credit cards, etc., that I PG prior to leaving and the current owner dont have my personal info to be able to do that either. The problem here though is that the CA dont have all the information making the whole collection sounding invalid however I dont want that hassle of going through having to fight it, have it put a dent in my credit and risk AA. I could try reaching the executive office of paypal and see if they could send the complete info over to the CA. I could also try reaching out to the exec office of the CA but it sounds like that would be a hassle as well and pretty much stuck between fighting it or settling it and then tracking down the business and its owner and getting reimbursed for that (since the agreement I have prior to leaving would indemnify me for anything that happens after I resigned), all assuming I can track them down. It been years since I been in contact with them so i dont know whats going on.
How old is this debt?

From what I was told, it started in '17 but was charged off from PP in '19 (would have to double check on the CO date although that may not exactly matter) so its still fresh.
