Re: SDFCU approval... maybe?

I don't have personal experience with this but I have read a few others post the same thing about secured sdfcu card and this seems to be the generic message ---- although I am hoping for you it isn't!!!

I have a thread in the rebuilding section, but I'm wondering if my question will get overlooked because it's in that section. So I'm copy and pasting part of my post from over there:

"I popped on here briefly just to browse through the forums, and a post caught my eye syaing that SDFCU graduates secured cards after X amount of time (maybe this is common knowledge, but last time I checked them out, they weren't graduating cards). So I decided to apply for the secured card to round out my rebuild "portfolio"... entered all required info... clicked submit... then immediately went to "check application status"... and it says the secured card application is pending, but i was instantly approved for a card with a $2,000 limit. Umm what?! Am I hallucinating? ...although it said the words "instant approval on 8/15 (today)" it also says "any approval displayed on this page may be a conditional approval and subject to review".

What is happening? Did I just get approved for my first ever unsecured card without even applying for an unsecured card?"

I haven't gotten a follow up email regarding my application, which is making me all the more skeptical... anyone have any thoughts/interpretations?? Could I get approved for unsecured even though I applied for secured?

a few other that appd for this same card got the same message. It is the secured card up to 2k (whatever you deposit up to that amount). It still has to complete a manual review for membership amd the card, but they still received the secured card they applied for. It was not an unsecured CC.

The last post I read with DPs on this was identical to yours. This was in the last month or so.

Re: SDFCU approval... maybe?

Update: I received an email this morning from SFDCU requesting a copy of my SS card and DL. I have 14 days to get them these things. The responses I got from my previous post were very helpful - I believe I got a generic "approval" until I provide these documents. Which is fine.

its been bothering me lately that my NFCU card hasn't graduated, despite paying it on time and almost always in full. I called them earlier to see if they could tell me if I'm doing something wrong that's preventing it from graduating. Long story short... the rep I spoke with said I prequalified for all of their cards (even with all my inquiries...) so I decided to apply for the Go Rewards over the phone. I don't know where my scores are at, but I know what my report looks like. I figured an additional inquiry won't hurt me at this point.... I was instantly approved for $15k. I may or may not have teared up on the phone. I'm in shock. My first unsecured bank card. I just can't believe it.

Congratulations on your approval! That's a very nice starting limit.

Re: SDFCU approval... maybe?

Congrats OP! By the way, I've come to realize that NFCU's prequal, both online and over the phone, are bogus. I've been "prequalified" for all their cards as well, and with my dirty file I know there's no way. So take their "prequalified" results with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, that is an excellent approval and SL!

Re: SDFCU approval... maybe?

UPDATE: What a week. I was approved for a cool card the other day, and my 5 remaining bad debts will be paid off within the next 2 days.

I spent about an hour on the phone with Citi today trying to convince them to let me pay off my account over the phone. I told them I wasn't comfortable with mailing them a check with no reference or acct number on it. I finally got a rep on the phone who said I could put my phone number on the memo line, and they will apply payment to the acct associated with the phone number. Good enough for me. I just mailed off the check along with a letter requesting receipt of payment.

I called the agency collecting for my Chase charge off to double check that after payment is received this Friday, Chase will update my report to show a $0 balance. The rep confirmed this... what a relief.

Finally, I just got off the phone with Americollect. Every time I wrote to them regarding my accounts, they treated my letters like disputes. I wasn't getting anywhere with my letters. During our phone convo, I agreed to pay a lump settlement payment in exchange for the 3 accts being removed from my reports and the other 3 accts not getting reported. They will all be considered paid in full, and the rep had no problem requesting deletion from the bureaus. He said those 3 accts should be gone in about 2 weeks.

I still have loads of inquiries. I haven't pulled my reports for a couple of months, but I believe Comcast remains as a collection with a $0 balance, and I think all of my charge offs are still on my reports, though they ALL have/will have $0 balances. I owe nothing on my 3 open cards. My student loans are my only debt, and those have always been paid on time.

Today is a good day. I'll pull my reports once enough time has passed where Chase, Citi, and Americollect should have all updated themselves.

Re: SDFCU approval... maybe?

@Anonymous Firstly, congratulations on the amazing starting limit with Navy!

Secondly, you will have to give the nrewards card time to unsecure. I believe my card was secured for 8 months until I was able to resolve a medical collection (my scores were in the 620s/630s before graduation). Doing things like going above the limit or paying late could potentially lengthen the time it takes to graduate.

I would suggest being patient if you can. If you absolutely can't wait, you can close the card (I highly suggest you don't do this).

After your Cap One card hits a year, you should be good to close there as well. You have the nrewards, more rewards, and the SDFCU to rely on now.

It has been amazing reading through your journey. By paying it forward and sharing your experiences, you are helping hundreds in your shoes today and in the future. People search this forum all the time.

Also love the attitude and patience. By not obsessing over your small point gains and losses it helps to ease the anxiety.

To anyone reading this, you can do it too. You need a game plan and a healthy attitude.

Have one of your cards report $20 and then PIF before the due date. Never have all your cards reort a $0 balance. Same applies nevefr have all cards report a balance. FICO dings you for that.
