my current situation:
- I have no open revolving accounts - the ones I had were charged off 6.5 years ago.
- 1 car loan closed with around 6 lates, and went into chargeoff for the last 2 payments ( my fault - I set up auto pay, and it stopped when the last payment was originally due, but I was just shy of 1 pay cycle behind, and had penalties that had added to the balance). So I paid for 6 years on this.
- closed car loan with perfect payment history.
- motorcycle loan, 3 years into a 6 year loan. perfect payments
- 2 small collections. a last bill for trash service from a house i moved out of 5 years ago, and a cable modem from another house I moved from. I hope to get a PFD.
- I just had to get replace my son's car, so have a carvana loan about to hit.
My scores are 2 in the mid 560's, with 1 at 519. My VS scores are mid 600's.
While waiting for my chargeoffs and collections to age off in january, I'm trying to get 3 bank revolving accounts on my report. I have been denied at every prequal site I could find other than Surge. Disco, cap one ("error - contact us"), merrick, bb&t, credit one(!), etc. I'm trying to avoid secured cards, so haven't hit open sky yet (with the current pandemic, I'm trying to hold on to what savings I have) - but I did try a few still.
Are there any other CC prequals (soft pulls) for rebuilding I may have missed?
My goals:
- potentially another car loan within 12 months, but not at my exisiting rates. My current car will probably need replaced over the next 12 months, as it just hit 100k and I commute a total of 80 miles daily.
- VA mortgage within the year. I planned on using a lender with no overlays who can handle scores in the 500's. Hopefully I can get my car to last that long without a major repair hitting me. Also hopefully I can get my scores up into the 600's to get a better rate.
update: I rechecked Cap One, and have an approval for the platinum secured. I will likely go with it for my second card - my initial plan was a cap one and discover secured card, as I didn't think I had any non-secured options.
Congrats on the approval and good luck with the rebuild, homeownership goals and car lasting another year or so!
I dont have any recommendations on secured cards, but if you have someone with excellent credit willing to add you as an AU, consider that option as well.
US Bank has two secured cards, one a plain Visa and the other co-branded with Harley-Davidson that has reward points.
Check out Navy Federal Credit Union. If you don't qualify for an unsecured card right now, their secured card typically grows to a $2,000 limit upon graduation. Navy has been good to me and many others here. Good luck
Try for a secured Disco. Or check for the unsecured on their pre-qual page. Its graduates while Cap1 doesnt any more. Or Merrick Bank which will double your CL after 7 months I believe.

hold on.. I tried their standard prequal - are you saying that the secured card wasn't part of that?

unfortuntley, those are some of the baddies dropping in january
I had lost my job unexpectedly and went into a bit of a depression for a bit. I kept up one car loan (the cheaper one) and rent, and that was it. I caught up my other car loan once my head cleared up, but not any of my cc's.

Health comes first. I'm glad you made it out and are working on your rebuild. (If you are ever able to make Navy whole they should welcome you back). In the meantime I would take firemedics advice with Discover. If your set back happened 6.5 years ago, your baddies should be dropping soon. Your score should rebound nicely.
Hopefully others will chime in with suggestions for secured cards that grow. You can also search previous threads for ideas. Keep us updated with your progress. ![]()
