New to posting - Medical collections w/ multiple questions

Hi,

I'm going to do WhyChat's process of taking care of medical collections.

A little background in case anyone needs the info: Medical bills less than 3 years old (the procedure of which caused all this mess -due to lost wages, having to find a new job- ugh!!Smiley Indifferent  The husband had to have what was supposed to be a routine OFFICE procedure that went worst case scenerio).

We are in an awesome situation now, except for our CRs.  We are not dodging any debts, but we do not talk to CAs at all.  We want to buy a new house (want to start the building process in the next 3 months) & need 620+ scores for our chosen mortgage brokers to be able to help us.

All medical stuff is sitting w/ CAs right now.  I'm curious at what point do I send letters to them (the CAs) (after doing dispute w/ CRAs & sending HIPAA letter w/ PIF w/ restrictive signature to OCs)?

And because I"m curious, the mortgage broker said she didn't think the med bills were effecting much (although they are a couple thousand dollars TOTAL among all of them) & that lenders tend to not pay as much attention to them.... is this true?  How much would getting them removed help our credit scores (I know you can't give me an exact figure, I'm just looking for estimates)?

Please, please, please don't hesitate to ask me anything that may help you to help me further!  I tried to give as much info as I could think of (off the top of my head)

Thank you sincerely for any/all help/insight you provide,

-JC

CURRENT SCORES AS OF 6/26/2009:

Mine:   TU - 585, EQ - 591, EX - 602

Husband:  TU - 561, EQ - 594, EX - 583

Goal:  short term: 620+, long term: 700 club

Re: New to posting - Medical collections w/ multiple questions

we were told when we refinanced four yrs ago that they (the lender) did not consider collections if they were medical - of course, that was four yrs ago...

I realize they don't (or *may* not) consider those collections when actually physically looking @ the report, but it has to factor into the overall credit score for sure...

IDK, I just know I'm overwhelmed, but motivated to get these taken care of!  Smiley Wink

Re: New to posting - Medical collections w/ multiple questions

We were just denied a mortgage because of scores below 620.  We have great payment history, DTI, etc.  We have one non-med collection that we're working on right now, but the rest is all med collections.  I'm with you - most lenders don't look badly upon med collections, but you still need that score above 620.

Good luck to you!  Sounds like we're pretty much in the same boat.  My husband and I are hoping to get pre-qualified within 2 months.  Just sent my pre-HIPAA letters out a little over a week ago - all NINETEEN of them!  It feels great to be making progress, even if the scores don't show it yet!

My LO said we needed to pay them off before closing.  I dont know why that is especially having the amount be so small, but that is what I am doing with the help of this forum.  I have learned so much so I have begun the process.

Re: New to posting - Medical collections w/ multiple questions

thenewgirl - I'm getting ready to pull our latest credit reports right now & start sending out the letters to the CRA.  If you don't mind, maybe we can stay in touch... it sounds like we are in the same exact boat!  We have excellent payment history (including a mortgage), DTI, etc. also.  And we have two non-med collections also (I can't decide if I want to PFD one of them or PIF & let it be what it is because I don't want to hurt our AAoA).

I'd love to see your progress while we are going through our situation as well & maybe compare them!

Are you on your pre-HIPAA to CRA's right now?

Sounds great!  I just got my green cards back from TU and EX today.  I'm hoping EQ will be tomorrow.  It's amazing how great it feels when each step of the process gets completed.  Even though we haven't seen any progress on our reports yet, such a huge weight gets lifted even as you leave the post office after mailing the pre-HIPAAs off.  It's sort of like, "Well, it's out of my hands now, and I just have to wait and see what happens before I move on to the next step."  And for whatever reason, when I got those green cards today I was really excited.  I guess because I know they have my information and I know that I'll either hear something from them or I'll hear something from Score Watch!  I'd love to keep in touch though.  Good luck!

Re: New to posting - Medical collections w/ multiple questions

I signed up for TrueCredit just now (for both husband & I) just to try it out & see how it works w/ daily monitoring!  The weid thing is the printout I have from our mortgage lady shows more stuff than what TrueCredit is showing, so I'll just use them in conjunction w/ eachother.

I plan on mailing my pre-HIPAAs tomorrow (working on my letters now)

I really don't know what to expect after this, but I agree; Once they are mailed off it will feel good to just say "out of my hands now..."

Re: New to posting - Medical collections w/ multiple questions

We are both using Score Watch through MyFICO.  My husband is also on True Credit right now, but just the 30 day free trial, so we will quit using that shortly.  I haven't looked into all the details of True Credit, so maybe it does the same thing as Score Watch, but I have my cell number linked to our Score Watch accounts so that it will send me a text if there are any changes, and it also notifies me when one of our scores reaches a certain number (right now it's set to notify us if we get to 580...that day can't come soon enough!).  It's kind of nice, because I don't have to worry about whether or not I should buy scores; it will just tell me when they get higher.  I also googled 'MyFICO discount code' and got a code for 20% off, so we're only paying about $7 each per month for it.

Also, I don't know how new you are to this particular site, but they used to have an awesome medical debt board here.  They discontinued the board, but you can still read all the posts.  I find myself going back to that every once in a while, just to read through other people's stories/situations.  They used to have the HIPAA process there, but that is gone now.  I studied and studied it, and then when I was finally ready to start my letters, it was gone! Smiley Sad  I am also using WhyChat as my guideline, but I feel like it's a little more confusing than the instructions that were here.

I just put a stamp on my PFD letter.  Hopefully they'll agree to take it off.  Fingers crossed!  Good luck with your pre-HIPAAs!

Re: New to posting - Medical collections w/ multiple questions

I recently had a medical collection removed (it was my only collection account) and EQ and TU both went up about 30 points.
