I am considering requesting OC to recall a medical collection from a reporting CA, which lists this debt from 2+ years ago as a collection on my credit report. I want to pay it and be done with it, and I don't want the collection on my report for 7 years not only because it is weighing down my score, but also because it shows the name of the OC/Medical Practice. The name of the practice is one that informs everyone that looks at it the type of treatment I received, which I am not very proud of and which is embarrasing. I believe my file will be viewed skeptically by lenders for this reason alone. First, I'd like to ask the OC to pull it from collections and pay it, which a trusted co-worker who was involved with medical collections recommended. How do I go about this if I am to make this call? Any does and dont's for requesting med provider pull a collection back? Seems like they might be put off by the request or feel I am holding their money hostage. What do I say?
Welcome to the board. Just tell them the true circumstances and ask that it be done. Here are the steps to proceed with medical collections
For unpaid medical debt that is reporting on your CR:
1. Call the OC and see if insurance can be billed (if you had insurance at the time), if not then
2. see if you qualify for Charity Care, if not then
3. ask that they recall the collection in exchange for full payment
4. Send the reporting CA a PFD offer
5. Google the HIPAA Process and contact its creator for help
