Hire an attorney.
Sounds like you have been hit by a scammer, I would hire an attorney on Monday

ok... I'll definitely look into that. just curious what laws did they break? I'm still fairly new and am reading the forums learning as much as I can.
What laws did they break? They stole your money. Theft, fraud, FDCPA Violations, are just a few things to start with. As others said, get an attorney and do it asap. Many consumer law attorneys will work on contingency costing you nothing upfront. Depending on what exactly is going on here, a police report will probably be in order as well.

I paid off a collection before finding this forum. The reason I paid it was because they said they would only delete if I paid immediately. (just curious here, did you see a copy of your credit report with this collection on it? Are you sure it was being reported or did they just tell you it was on your report?) They wouldn't tell me any account information. I was able to track down who it was with. I later filed a complaint against them for not telling me why I was owed money. They responded to the complaint saying that the account was deleted. Weeks have went by and now they have sent me a letter stating the original creditor couldn't verify the debt so they have ceased collection of this account and have returned it to them. I already paid them so what do I do from here. (was this letter on any type of letter head? Did you recognize the collector by any of the names tossed around on this forum or maybe googled to see what has been written about them by others out there? I realize you were trying to do the right thing and we all learn from these kind of things. Anyway, I'm asking because you will need this information for any action you take against them. Good luck and let us know if you find a way to resolve this)
