Rebuilding question

So I should be discharged any day. (Our 3 month mark was dec 14th)
We just bought a car today (hubby is main, im a cosigner)

We are looking into what to do credit card wise to start building. I read the 700 in 24 but I have a few questions...

Wouldnt closing the card at a year hurt you? It would make your length of time be less etc.

Would it be possibly better to apply for a cap 1? If so, what card am i hoping for? Any that we should pass on?

Any tips on awesome cards would be nice. Im just not sure about getting a card only to mess with my credit by closing it a year later

Re: Rebuilding question

Good questions... I'm curious too.

Just in case you didnt know... cap one has a prequalification you can do. So, dont just jump into any ole app and cross your fingers... at least try to prequalify for one and then cross fingers. Smiley Happy

Re: Rebuilding question

Well the idea, behind closing it after a year is to avoid the fees associated with subprime cards, plus they typically dont grow. You just need them long enough to convince the next lender you can be responsible with your credit.Thats why you get rid of them for cards such as capital one, so that you can grow with those cards and age your accounts. Capital One is an excellent option out of bankruptcy, them and discover are usually BK friendly. I know Capital One, will take you right after bankruptcy, discover you might have to wait a few months unless you get the secured version. As far as Capital One, I would apply for the secured, platinum or quicksilver one, but use the prequalify first. Its pretty accurate, but not 100%. As for other banks, stay away from chase, citibank, bank of america and Amex. They wont even look at you for years! Most credit unions wont look at you until you are 2 years from BK discharge.  Hope this helps!

For clarification, if the credit card is in good standing and 0 balance when closed, it will stay on your credit for up to 10 years.  Closing a card in good standing does not have an effect on your age of accounts.

What card are you speaking about?

If you didnt burn Cap1. Try the pre-qual site. Go with the Platinum, no QS1. Try to pass on any secured first. If its not possible there's always Cap1 and Disco secured.

Only cards that you would have to close would be predator cards like Credit One and the like. Try to get in with a secured card that will graduate. If you could post who got burnt and current FICO scores that would help also in trying to steer you guys the right way. Until then dont make any sudden moves until we know more to help.

Re: Rebuilding question

Disneymom234,

Closing a credit card within a year to avoid an annual fee is not going to along term effect on your credit. It will only have a minor impact on  the average age of your accounts. During the first year of my rebuild, I opened 2 secured credit cards and closed them six months later, because I was able to get unsecured cards. Make sure if you close the card that it is paid in full be you close it. I'm at the 7 year mark, and my AAoA is 4.5 years.

I would check CapitalOne or Discover for a preapproval on a no fee card first. I would also look to see if there is a credit union or bank near you to see if they have a no annual fee unsecured card or a secured card that will graduate to an unsecured card. Also you want to check to see if the lender for your car loan issues credit card.

Hope that helps.

Re: Rebuilding question

Thanks! We didnt have many credit cards, we had a business that went under after a partner jumped ship and countires after emptying the bank... left us high and dry lol

Credit one is the card i was asking about as thats the first one they list on the bk7 discharge to 700 in 24 months post.

We burned nissan motor acceptance

a few local credit unions

a hospital,

and an old landlord (that really we shouldnt have owed money to, no point in taking to court though when we decided to file chap 7 on the other stuff, they charged ridiculous move out fees like 25 bucks to tighten a screw on a toilet lid...)

Also gateway one lending

Us bank

Paypal

We did have a cc from capital 1 for like 1k... but it was charged off back in like 2013 or so.... we are not even sure where that card came from and cap 1 said its limit had been 300.. so not sure how it got to over 1k.

We hadnt had a credit card since i had closed all credit cards we were aware of in 2010ish

Re: Rebuilding question

At the moment its prestige but the dealer has a 5 day program for us to take it back if we want.

Im finding myself wondering if they lied to me. The price of the car was 11500 but on my paperwork its aboit 600 more.... they claim its a fee for the lender or something... like they had to pay them to take my loan... but really i pay.

It doesnt make much sense the more i think about it though.. its not itemized or listed as that fee anywhere, and prestige preapproved me and sent me to that dealership. They want 600 bucks more for that? On top of the loan interest already? Ive been searching trying tomfind out if that is really legit. I had my kids and it was late and we had been there hours and the answer "made sense" at the time. Now not so much

Re: Rebuilding question

These dealers try all they can to get extra $ all the time. Delivery fee, wash fee, check air pressure fee, this fee., that fee, tax tag and title I can understand. For what we know that was his kick back for using that lender for you to pay. You can ask for the itemized bill of sale. Ask them to show you what and where is it listed on their bill of sale. Bet its worded in their favor. Or look at it now and try to find out whats listed. If it isnt there it's buried in 1 of the catagories and have them explain it. 600 isnt a lot. But if the interest is high it will cost over 1000 on your loan over 4-5 yrs.
