Starting from SCRATCH!

Hi,

Im new here. Im glad I found these boards. I have bad credit high 400's credit score. I have about 12 collections/charge offs. 1 Repo. They charged off last year. Now, Im trying to get everything straight. Some peopel are telling me to hire a credit repair service, other tells me to do it myself. I just dont have the time. Do you guys think a credit repair service would help some ?

I will be trying to do pay for delete as well. Im just scared to use the credit service and have them red flag me and try to sue me. When now, been a couple years and have ket low profile lol.

I just opened 2 secured cards and a secured loan. What else should I do to better my credit. I would like to get a mortgage in a few years. Im so lost. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Re: Starting from SCRATCH!

"Credit repair" companies are nothing more than predatory.  They have no special powers or inside connections to do anything special for you.  Anything they can do, you can do yourself... for free.

Not all, but many collection agencies offer PFD.  The charge off and repo notations will likely stay on your reports for 7 years based on the DOFD (date of first default) that led to the charge off, or repo.  Some people have had success with goodwill removal campaigns but most don't.  Disputing accurate information is strongly discouraged as it often has negative consequences.

Without knowing specifics of what you owe, and what type of accounts are charged off, here's some guidelines

  • Any revolving credit line with a remaining balance has a negative impact on your utilization until those accounts are paid/settled to a zero balance.
  • Once these accounts are paid/settled for less this will help your scores.
  • Once they are paid/settled, they will also stop reporting the CO status monthly, this will help your scores start to recover.
  • Once they are paid/settled, this also eliminates the possibility of them suing you.
  • The more time that passes from when they stop reporting monthly, the more your scores will improve, BUT, your scores wont fully recover until ALL adverse information falls off.
  • Disputing accurate information where the reporting has gone dormant can cause the reporting to update.  Scoring algorithms will see it as a more recent event and further ding your scores.
  • Adding more positive accounts will not offset the negative reporting. Frequent credit seeking will only set you back.

In addition to the above, the best thing you can do with the new accounts you have is to obviously use your new cards responsibly, and pay the card balances in full every month.  The other thing is to allow time to do it's thing.  There's a lot of useful information, advice and success stories in the "Rebuilding your credit" board.  Set some time aside and read through the posts there.

If you have questions about your specific situation,  the more details you can provide, the more specific advice you'll get.

Re: Starting from SCRATCH!

Ditto @JoeRockhead , nice writeup.

You don't mention addressing how you got in this mess. It sound kinda like, "I got in a credit mess, how can I get in an even bigger mess?" You may get away with running up card debt and not paying. That won't happen with a mortgage, if you manage to get one. It will not be a charge off, it will be a repo and they will sue you.

Having said that, if you post more details, we will try to help you raise your scores, even if we don't think it's in your best interest, lol.

Re: Starting from SCRATCH!

Ask all the debt collectors to provide records confirming that you owe the debt. If they can’t, the collections shouldn’t be enforceable in court. Those with proof you should probably pay, so they stop affecting all your credit scores.

Collection agencies providing requested debt validation is only applicable when requested within a set time frame after initial contact from them.

Debt validation is within 5 days of initial contact.  Proof of debt is 30 days after initial contact.

They aren't required to respond to any requests after that.
