As I continue to try to rebuild my credit after a bk chap. 7 discharged 9/12, I keep reading about how great nfcu is and I would love to join. This is my dilemma...I know that I would be able to join through my Grandfather who retired from the navy. He is deceased as is my grandmother. I verified through nfcu last week that I could still be eligible even though my grandfather is deceased and was not a member. The problem is that I do not have any proof of his retirement. My father has his DD214, but I am estranged from him for many years and cannot ask him for it. From what I have researched, I am not able to request a copy of the DD214 because I am not the next of kin. Should I take a chance that nfcu will not ask for any documents and open a membership? I'm scared because I've read about their security department freezing accounts because of problems with eligibility. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
You should only need the last for digits of his social security number, birth date and service affiliation.
If you find you need more, as a non veteran or next of kin, the National Personnel Records Center can release certain miitary service information without consent from the veteran or next of kin.
I have to warn you, getting records from them is a long, slow process. Even for the veteran themselves.
Thanks for that info. I am going to look further into that. I do have his name, birth date and military affiliation information, but I don't have his last 4 of his SS#. Do you think that I should wait until I have more proof before applying for membership? Also, I joined ancestry.com and found some pretty interesting things. I have a copy of his enlistment record and pictures of him and his ship he was assigned to as well as a picture of a very vague pension document. Its pretty amazing the things that you can view through them.
Yes, you do need the last 4 of his social.
The service member just has to be eligible to join. Not sure if they need to be retired or drawing a pension.
@Daisy10
You do not need the last four of his social security number. Call 888.842.6328 and tell them what your affilitation is.
If you do get in, treat them right and you will LOVE them! Good luck on getting in, report back
