Tips and Tricks

Hello everyone. I've spent the day browsing the forums and I finally decided to post. I know there is no one size fits all solution to credit repair. I'm hoping to find the fit for me. I declared Ch. 7 BK in 2010. It actually boosted my score from the low 500's to the low 600's. However I haven't been able to get past about 640.

Right now I'm down to about 588 (per credit karma.) In the past month I decided to get a new car and I went from Carmax to a traditional dealership to see if I could get a better rate. I ended up turning down offers from both because the rates were higher than I wanted. Turns out I had some tax liens hit my report back in January and my car payment reported late for 3 months right after I was discharged from bankruptcy. I am in the process of having the liens removed because I don't think they are valid and I called capital one but they weren't helpful. I made a late payment last July when my adopted mom passed. Although I made the full payment, there was a late payment fee (which I didn't know about) that was unpaid until I made one of my quarterly extra payments.

With all that I kind of went a little crazy and did a lot of credit card applications. I got a $400 Walmart approval but mostly denials. SO now I have a lot of inquiries (like 20-30 total). Credit scores around 600. 2 Capital one credit cards for $750 each and one Orchard Bank Card (soon to be Capital One) for $300. I also have a Kay card for $1500. My credit utilization is generally under 30% but right now it's about 50%. I'm about to pay all my cards off. I also have about $70K in student loans which I've recently started paying.

I've seen something about having "arrived" when you have $5K+ in credit. Is this all on one card? Are there any credit cards (not secured) that I can/should apply for or a personal loan? My goal is to have around an 800 credit score but for now I'll be happy just making it to 700. Can anyone give me some helpful advice?

I'd disagree with the amount, and even presence of a card or cards. Everyone has different goals. Different strokes for different folks. I've seen solid 800 FICOs with only hundreds in credit where the goal was a high FICO not high CLs. Conversely, I've seen hundreds of thousands in available credit with 600 FICOs and they were happy with that.

Aside from CapOne, do you have any other CCs? Ideally, 2-3 are good for mix. IMO, nix the loan.

An 800 FICO is impossible with the BK reporting. The highest I've seen was maybe 760-770 but that person had perfect reports aside from the BK with 20-30 years' worth of history with accounts not included or closed during the BK. I think it is possible to hit into the low 700s with a BK though while being baddie-free. I'd work on repair.

Thanks for your reply. I have a Kay Jewelers and a Walmart card. I still have about 5-7 years before the bk falls from my credit report. So it's unlikely that I'll get past 700 until then?

Re: Tips and Tricks

I do believe that if you subscribe to transunion they say that $2000 limit is there magic number for a good credit boost. But you might get yourself into trouble if you get to many new credit cards in a short period so watch out!
7/1/13 - EQ = 593 TU = 578 EXP = 573 FICO
8/11/13 - EQ = 600 TU = 590 EXP = 603 FICO
10/1/13 - EQ = 611 TU = 689 EXP = 605 FICO
12/4/13 - EQ = 625 TU = 648 EXP = 604
Lender Pull 2/18/14 - EQ = 630 TU = 678 EXP = 594
Lender Pull 2/28/14 (EQ 640) (TU 660) (EX 655) Rapid re-score =)
9/30/14 - EQ = 660 TU = 710 EXP = 669

I think you can easily hit into the 700s within 1-2 years with the credit accounts you have provided the baddies and liens are removed and util drops. For max points, pay 2 of your 3 CCs to $0 and get the third to report a balance of under 9% of the CL.

That comment is geared towards VantageScore vs. FICO. Some FAKOs do require a minimum CL lest you get dinged. FICO isn't like that. I saw one poster once iwth a verified 820ish FICO with only a combined CL of $1000.
