Trying to fix this mess. couple questions - please help!!

I'm trying to clear up some things on my boyfriend's credit report and I have a couple questions. I wasn't sure what all info I needed to give so if more details are needed just ask.

1. Last week he got a letter in the mail from a collection agency wanting to settle on a medical bill   that he owes.  I know you should never talk to the collection agency people so is it a good idea to accept this offer or not? What would be the best way to go about this so it gets deleted from his report?

2. He also just recently filled out financial aid papers for a bunch of hospital bills that he had. He just got a letter in the mail from the hospital saying that they are gonna pay 100% for 5 different bills that he had, 2 of which were a couple years old and already in collections. So, my question is are they automatically going to be deleted from his credit report since they are taken care of? I'm pretty sure it's the collection agency that's reporting, not the hospital. So, how would he go about making sure those get taken off?

3.  He has 1 charge off from AT&T and 1 collection account from Verizon that says closed by grantor. Both of these accounts were something that his mom opened up under his name when he was 18 and now he's left with this on his credit report to take care of by himself. I just want to know what to do to get these deleted. They are both pretty small amounts so should he offer to PFD? Or what would be the best thing to do?

Sorry that was so much. I just really wanna do the right thing and get all this taken care of. This board has helped me so much! Thanks to everyone!!!

If its a less amount and you have the money AND it will be taken off his CR, I would do it.

They should- talk to the hospital and see if they will contact the CA to make sure it has been taken off completely and not just marked as paid

My recommendation is a PFD

Well, that depends. What is the DOFD, DOLA, and SOL for this account? Have you searched the CA on this forum to see if they are PFD friendly?

Ask the hospital to contact the CA and pull the accounts back and to instruct the CA to delete from his credit report.

Who is reporting the accounts? PFD may hurt more than help if they are his oldest accounts. What is DOFD, DOLA and SOL?

1. The DOFD is 5/2004. The DOLA says N/A so I'm not sure. This is listed under the title Closed negative account on his credit report but then it says Type of Account: Open. It also says this is his oldest account, which makes no sense to me because the At&t and Verizon accounts were both opened in 1998. The collection agency is called NCO Medclear. I did search for info on them but didn't find anything.

2. He called the hospital and the women told him that all 5 bills were in collections, even though only the 2 oldest ones are showing up on his credit report. The other 3 are fairly new so I guess they haven't posted yet. But she told him to call back in a week and she would give him the phone numbers to all the collection agencies and he could call and ask it to be deleted. But that really worries me that they will end up telling him that they won't delete them. I just wish the hospital would do it for him like you said.

3. It looks like AT&T is reporting that account and I thought Verizon was reporting but under the comments section it says: Collection Account. Now it says that Verizon is his most recent account but why does it say that when it was opened in 1998? Shouldn't that be his oldest?

AT&T - DOFD 4/2005. DOLA is N/A
Verizon - DOFD 12/2004. DOLA is N/a again.

Now I'm not sure if you go by the SOL for written contracts or open accounts for these. All 3 of these are under the headline "Closed Accounts". But they all say Type of Account: Open and it's says they are all Revolving. We live in WV so the SOL for written contracts is 10 years and 5 years for Open accounts.

What makes no sense? If the OC is reporting, it is counted in his age of report. The account being reporting by the CA is not counted in age.

DOFD and date opened are not the same. DOFD is when the account went delinquent.

DOLA would be date of last payment or date account last used.

You can try for a PFD with the CA, but that doesn't mean the OC's TL will be deleted. You'll have to GW them to have it deleted.

Seach for NCO Financial or just NCO to find information about them.

Wait a few weeks and send the CA a DV letter.

I am confused. Is the same account? Does it say it is his most recent account or most recent collection?

Is the AT&T, Verizon, and NCO all for the same account or 3 seperate accounts.

Re: Trying to fix this mess. couple questions - please help!!

Yes the NCO, at&t, and Verizon are for 3 separate accounts. Verizon says it's his most recent account and the DOFD on that is 12/2004. And the DOFD for NCO that says it's his oldest account is 5/2004. But if the all the CA's don't count in the account age why does it say that for NCO? I thought that was the CA reporting or maybe I'm reading this wrong. But it doesn't even list which hospital that is for so I figured it had to be a CA. I was thinking that the only 2 OC's reporting were Verizon and at&t because those are the only 2 that actually have the names of the companies on there and there's no other name of a CA or anything like the others have.

I just have one more question and I hope this makes sense. I always thought that the 3 accounts that are listed as negative accounts (NCO, at&t, Verizon) were separate from the 8 Collections that he has. Is it possible the NCO is also one of the collections and it's being reported twice? There is a collection he has that is very close to the amount he owes for NCO and I just thought maybe it's actually the same thing. I know I should be smart enough to read the report and know but this is all really confusing to me.

Thank you again for all your help.

It is possible to have a collection reported by more than one CA at a time. You would DV the CA that no longer has the account.

On the accounts being reported by the OC, all you can do is offer PFD, if they reject, then pay and send GW letters.

You can't DV an OC like you can a CA.

If they are his oldest account, deleting them is maybe not what you want.

Always check SOL before contacting a CA or OC. SOL begins running from DOLA. If you can pay the account right away if you were to be sued, then you can not worry about SOL.
