Re: You know you have bad credit when.....

Selflender works a bit differently than a SSL. Plus, just because one credit union turns a person down (or requires a co-signer) does not mean that they all will.

My two cents worth would suggest Selflender as well to get started and avoid getting more pulls and possible denials. Besides, it is so frustrating and disheartening to get turned down when starting to rebuild.

Selflender is a little different than SSL, but the effect is the same it puts an installment loan on your credit report.  Plus i do not think it is possible to get denied for a selflender account.

Ah. You're being dinged for not having an open installment loan. It stinks.

@Anonymous's just so strange that paying off an installment loan early can actually damage your credit rating. I was thinking about whether I might want, a few years down the road, to pay off the Penfed used-car loan (60 months @ 3.99%) early when I'm ready to buy my next car, but after reading those past couple of posts I think I might do better just to let it go through its full term.

There are SSLs that do NOT require a credit check, which is what we were suggesting he try since he was denied initially from his credit union.

@joe8185 You can pay off the used car loan early, just make sure you have another installment loan to take the place of it.

That's one of the things I find so frustrating about the whole credit score idea - if you are not currently in debt, you ger dinged so you must be perpetually in debt. When I owed almost $100,000 on a mortgage and another $30,000 several credit cards I was a member of the high 700s club. Now that I have no debt, two houses free and clear, a car and an RV free and clear, $50,000 cash in several bank and investment accounts and $1500 more in income each month than I need, I can't even get into the 600s club. It seems a mid 6-figure Net Worth is more of a liability than an asset. My college Accounting professors are spinning in their graves. With all that going against me, I can almost see why the FICO algorithm would assume I have no plans to make a debt payment next month - I have no debt to pay.

Re: You know you have bad credit when.....

BEWARE THE BANKER, the document you sign could bring all sorts of grief

I went to the Credit Union where I do my banking to talk about a SSL and the banker finally agreed to do it. $2,000 for 18 months at 2.85%. Sounds good? I thought so, so I started signing documents. The first was the agreement that my account ending in 4545 would be the collateral for the loan, the second the Promise to Pay. Then the third was another collateral agreement and I wondered why they needed a second collateral agreement when the loan will be 100% collaterialized with an account I cannot access until the loan is paid (first collateral agreement) and then I see that this one posits as collateral EVERY account I have with them. That would be the $2,000 in 4545 and another $10,000 in my main account ending in 3658!!!! **bleep**!!!!

I asked why they want collateral of 6 times the cash they are "lending" me. After all, it's not like cash depreciates like a car does. Their response: "take it or leave it". I left it.

Good move - Seriously, check out Alliant.  you deposit funds, take the loan, pay back 90% of the loan - leaving you with ~55 months paid on a 60 month loan.  and since they release the hold immediately on the amount you pay, you can put your initial stake back to work where it'll earn some interest...although the Alliant savings rate is 1% with no requirements, so they're not a bad place to park an emergency fund anyway

Are there CU's that don't have credit criteria for joining? I was rejected from several initially from just membership.
