check your chex report (it's a credit report for deposit accounts), see if there's anybody you owe money to and pay them back
then look for 'second chance checking accounts' or checking accounts that don't pull chexsystems
Just signed up for a Sofi checking/saving account. and got approved right away.

congrats, sofi has really fast transfers and a good interest rate on their savings and checking accounts. they also offer 3% CB on the first year with their CC if you maintain a $1k monthly DD.
their bonus paid out fast as well.
they also have like $15 in tasks you can do in the earn section for some extra money
personal lawsuit related thoughts aside
my chex wasn't pulled either when I opened accounts with them
Congrats! Well thats water under the bridge now.
As others have said first step is to register with chexsystems. Check your chexsystems report for any incorrect info and dispute it. Any banks that you have burned or had your account closed or charged off with a negative balances try to contact those banks or collectors and pay them off.
After that you have a few options. Most of the big banks now have "secured" checking accounts that don't check your credit reports or chexsystems. Chase has secured checking, Wells Fargo has the clear checking. My opinion thats your best option because you can build back your relationship and switch to their full access accounts in the future. You will only be denied if you still owe them money for the most part from a closed checking account with negative balances or credit cards. Second best option you can try is to apply at local credit unions they may be more forgiving in person and allow you to show them pay stubs or income to be approved.
If you still cant get an account your third option would be any one of the numerous online debit card accounts. Worst case scenerio if you really need an account you can get a prepaid debit card from the store.
