Can an original creditor legally update an account after it has been paid and closed?

creditor recently added late payments on an account paid and closed over two years. However, the lates newly reported are accurate.

I believe they can, which is why sometimes it is actually worse to pay an old debt than to not pay - (a failing of the FICO scoring system IMHO)
