My husband is trying to get his credit score up (492-485-454). He has 14 medical collections totalying $2,200 and 1 repo for $7,461 that states (transferred to recovery;Closed 7/08)? We were wondering what our next step is? I understand we have to pay the accounts but is there a process that we need to follow?
Thank you very much.
Is it paid or unpaid? UNPAID
If paid, who did you pay, the OC (original creditor: doctor, dentist, hospital, etc.) or the CA (collection agency)?
If unpaid, do you have the money to pay it off in full? SOME OF THEM
Do you remember the date(s) of treatment? NO
Have you ever disputed the med collection? If yes, when and how? NO
If you did dispute the collection, is it currently marked as "disputed and/or verified" on your report(s)?
Have you ever requested debt validation from the CA? If yes, what did they send you and when did you receive it? NO
Welcome to the forums!
Are all of these med collections from the same original creditor? Are all of the collections being reported by the same CA? Can you afford to pay off all or some of the unpaid collections if you have to? Have you read the "HIPAA letter process and medical collections" link in my sig line below?
3-nationwide - $399
1-harvard - $1,090
1-collect sys - $1,038
5-medical payment - $473
1-americollect - $75
1-nco fin - $30
I have read the posts-I am just sooooo overwhelmed and do not know if I have to send each HIPPA letter for each listing or all together. I can pay some of the small amounts in full.
Thank you for your time and patience
If I have 3 different Collections with 1 CA do I send 1 letter with all 3 or 3 seperate letters? Also, Do you send the letter and then pay or pay and then send the letter? Sorry I am just so confused
Remember, only start the HIPAA letter process if you can pay ALL the money owed to the CA you're going up against, no matter how collections you have with them. Here are the first few steps in the HIPAA letter process. You need to write one letter per collection, but you can place mutiple letters in one envelop to the CRAs (credit reporting agencies). Do not pay anyone a penny, at least not yet.
1.) Opt Out of two things: Your Credit Reports and All Creditors. The first one ensures that the CRAs will not sell your personal data to anyone else (haha…no more data mining). The second one will prevent JDBs (and CAs) from buying and selling bogus collections.
Use this link to opt-out of your credit reports
OPT-OUT CREDIT REPORTS (or call 1.888.567.8688)
Use this link to opt-out from all of your CURRENT creditors that you're in GOOD standing with. Do not attempt to opt-out with any CAs or current creditors that you're in BAD standing with (i.e. charge-offs, or currently late).
2.) Also, be sure to update your personal information with the CRA's before attempting to reestablish your credit.
3.) Send the pre-HIPAA dispute letter to the CRA ('s) CM (no RR, this is
the only letter in the HIPAA process where you will not send it
CMRRR) and wait up to 35 days for the results of the their
investigation(s). Be
sure to handwrite this letter (and the envelop too) using personalized
stationary and teal blue ink. If your med collection is deleted, you're
finished. If collections are not deleted, please post again in this thread for more advice.

Does the letter go to Experian, TransUnion or Equifax?
Yes, whichever ones are reporting the med collections.
