Not true. They can ask, but you can say no.

They aren't allowed to refuse the transaction if you refuse to show ID. At least with VISA and MC.

You're right! I want to say its amex too, but who knows with themSmiley Happy

Um, I used to buy cigarettes for my babysitter with a handwritten note from her saying it was okay!!

I remember doing that without a note. Not sure how many times I bought cigarettes for "my dad".
My dad used to send me running to the corner store for his cigarettes too. He used to give me a dollar and I would come back with two packs of Salem Menthols.

Topic title not withstanding, this isn't really a credit card thing, so much as me being happy with myself.

I was at Best Buy today and paid with my credit card. The guy asked me for ID. I very nicely said I didn't have it with me, it was in the car, and while I wouldn't mind going out to get it, it actually violates the credit card policy for the store to ask.

"uhhh..." and he calls over his manager.

He repeats what I said, and she says, "Yes mam, you're right." She tells the guy he only needs to check ID when the card isn't signed on the back, and that it does violate card policy to ask.

He apologized, and apparently another manager had yelled at him for not checking it. So I told him I knew what it was like to get different messages from different bosses, and it was no big deal.

I wouldn't normally stand up for myself like that, but first of all, didn't want to go back to the car, and second of all, they're really not allowed to ask!!

I have no problems showing my ID.  And I would prefer to have someoen ask to see my ID instead of allowing someone else to use my card whose not me.

I also wish more stores would ask to see the back of the card when I have signed it so they can confirm I'm me.

Re: Checking ID with Credit card

i really don't know how i feel about being asked to show my ID.  sometimes it's annoying, like when i'm in a hurry, & sometimes i don't really have an opinion one way or another.

someone once told me to sign all of my cards "SEE ID" so that more people would check my ID, & that there would be less of a chance that someone could forge my signature.  but almost no one even looks at it, they just swipe it.

one person did tell me once that i had to sign my card, & i almost got into an argument with them about how No, i didn't have to sign my card.  most of the people that do check the back, do ask to see my ID.

i'm not really worried about having someone memorize my address & steal my identity by checking my ID.

Re: Checking ID with Credit card

A couple of weeks ago, I was at HD and the cashier asked me for my ID (I have spent over $10,000 in the last four to five months there--and she is asking for ID on $400). It was annoying, but I figure that since it was their card, they have the right to do that? If it were MC/Visa, I would have told her to kick bricks.

Writing "SEE ID" is actually a very poor idea. Note the message next to the signature box, "Not Valid Unless Signed". If your signature isn't on the back, merchants CAN refuse the transaction, by CCC rules. Of course the issue coming up at all is rare (most places don't look at the back, much less check for signature) but I have actually seen a few places with signs say they will not accept cards that say "See ID".

VISA talks about it here, at the bottom of the page.

Re: Checking ID with Credit card

Post Offices now have signs up informing customers that CCs will not be accepted unless the back is signed. I thought that that was interesting.

AFAIK, technically, writing SEE ID (or anything else) renders a CC invalid as it's not valid unless signed (not sure with Amex, theirs say "Authorized Signature"). But, what happens if you sign your name, and then scribble SEE ID at the end of it?

Re: Checking ID with Credit card

i did read that somewhere, actually, about it becoming invalid.  i'm not too worried about it.  i hardly use any of my credit cards, except for online transactions.  i use my chase debit card for everything, because i get reward points.  that one actually has nothing on the back.  i didn't sign or write See ID.

According to VISA if the card says SEE ID, the procedure is exactly the same as if it's unsigned. Ask the customer to sign the card and then finish the transaction once they do. So assumedly it isn't invalid forever, it's just not valid until signed, once it's signed then all is well.

Re: Checking ID with Credit card

MC and VISA say you must sign your CC. "See ID" in the signature panel is not valid.
