Computer Gurus? Question for you?

Hey all,

This is Hearts.... I am having some problems with my computer and I can't get my cd/dvd's to run and I keep getting this error?

Restriction Warning:  Administrator has prohibited access to cd/dvd rom drives

What does this mean?

Thanks

Re: Computer Gurus? Question for you?

IF this is at home- someone has either installed software or change the local security policy (likley intentionally) blocked access to the CD/DVD drives-

They can also block: Floppys, USB devices, any new hardware and lots of other things.

If this is an office computer- call the help desk.

Re: Computer Gurus? Question for you?

Any chance this an Acer Brand computer?
You could have a virus or-

How to fix this- not for the inexperianced as you can srew up your mahine pretty easy-

1) Click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Local Security Policy.
2) Click the + next to Local Policies to expand it, then click on Security Options.
3) Find "Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only" and make sure that it is Disabled. This SHOULD not affect your ability to use the CD-ROM if you are at the computer, but it has done so in a few cases.
4) If it is Enabled, Disable it, and then shut down and reboot Windows.

If the last procedure did not help, try this:

1) Open the System Registry -- CAUTION: Do not do anything in here that you are not sure of. Changes here can be catastrophic if not done correctly. -- To open the Registry, click Start, Run, type REGEDIT, and then click OK.
2) Expand HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE
3) Expand SOFTWARE
4) Expand Microsoft
5) Expand WindowsNT
6) Expand Current Version
7) Don't expand, but click on Winlogon
8) In the right pane, double-click on allocatecdroms, and then change the value to 0.
9) Close the Registry, close Local Security Settings, shut down and restart Windows (shutting down and restarting Windows may not be necessary, but it's better to be safe).

Re: Computer Gurus? Question for you?

Thanks for the responses.  Yes, this is an Acer computer.  I bought it brand new but it had no software on it and I had to load my Microsoft 2003 on it.  It is a home computer.

Re: Computer Gurus? Question for you?

Tim,

What kind of software would have to have been installed to block me?

Re: Computer Gurus? Question for you?

Tim,

Tried all you suggested.  First option was already set at 0 and the second one did not help either, unfortunately.

Re: Computer Gurus? Question for you?

Was it working normally then just quit?

If that is the case and you have done every thing Timothy suggested, my first thought is a virus.

There is a nasty one going around disguised as a antivirus program. It started off telling me I did not have administrator rights and then took over my entire computer.

I would run a known good antivirus program and see what comes up. If nothing does or it does but does not get rid of it, download a program called malwarebytes antivirus and malware. Run it. If you have this particular virus, I know for a fact this will get rid of it.
