This subject line really struck a cord with me as I have a co-worker that is totally scamming on the programs that were put in place to help those that truly need it.  My co-worker makes roughly $40k per year.  Granted, she's a single-parent (never been married) and I'm sure that is difficult, but......$40k is more than some married couples make, even when both work full time.  Anywho, she has been getting her rent subsidized by the government for at least the last 4 years (for as long as she's worked where I work, but I'm sure much longer than that).  She has a 16-year old son and her baby is about to turn 2.  After she got pregnant with the 2nd child, she decided she needed a bigger place than her 2-bedroom apartment, so she found a nice house to rent with 3-bedrooms.  Housing Authority granted her a larger subsidy for the more expensive rental.  After baby born in early 2010, she immediately got the State to pay for the daycare (roughy $1,000/month).  Then she applied for the WIC program and is getting that benefit, too.  I am snoopy and checked the WIC website and found that she does indeed make too much monthly to qualify for it.

This Christmas, she bought her son a car for his present.  Nice.  She regularly gets her hair done, manicures, pedicures, new clothes all the time.  Of course she can spend her paychecks on this stuff since WE, THE TAXPAYERS, are paying her rent, daycare and some food costs.

It sickens me.  Most of us have to live within our means, meanwhile scum like her just get the government to pay and they think nothing of it.  No shame in her game!

It's that word the OP used...."entitlement"........it's that mindset that is destroying this country.

Stuff likes this disgust me when there are people who really need the money to get by from day to day .

Report this lowlife and don't feel guilty ..if anything you will be helping someone in need.

Here In NYS there's a hotline to report scum like this..I suggest you check your state and if you can't find a number

write a letter to the Appropriate Dept.

It's our Goverment who is to blame for this sense of entitlement people have and it didn't start with the current goverment

but they are continuing the same sense of entitlement ...all for votes.

We'll ever stop all waste and compared to other forms of abuse, a few taxpayer-funded lunches aren't a drop in the bucket. It's wrong but minimal in the grander scheme of things.

I'm from New York, too. We've never met a tax our politicians didn't fall immediately in love with. Even if the cancelled WIC tomorrow, taxes still wouldn't go down.

Re: Frustrated with Gov't Funded Programs

Since this post has popped up to the top of the list...I thought I would add a few memory lanes items...

My son is an exchange student.  The first family (here in the US - it was a relatively local program) demanded that I file for the free lunch program because I income qualified for it and they did not.   I was already paying for all of their groceries and their utilities!  PLUS paying for all of my son's expenses, to include school stuffs, clothes, toothpaste, etc.  I refused to apply for the program.   They were LIVID!!   Please keep in mind that I was already paying for the ENTIRE families groceries and utilities!  Which also meant I was paying for all of my son's lunches to be brown bagged.  (I would take over bags of groceries every weekend.)   They tried very hard to get my son's ss# so they could deduct him on their taxes too.   The family of two made 86k+ a year.  So they could afford to buy their own food and pay their own water/gas/electric/phone/internet bills.

The second family (abroad) actually claimed my son for welfare benefits (cash subsidy!), over billed me for their utility costs, and refused to feed my son.   I was paying, every month, a large amount for rent (room & board), plus paying for all of his individual expenses.   According to the law, the family is not allowed to charge me rent, room/board, or anything.  I can choose to give them something, a stipend, so long as she reports it as income.   The money was never reported.  They took it to a new level and actually claimed my son as their very own dependent on their taxes.   I am happy to say she got busted by their own IRS for fraud.  I had nothing to do with it - her getting busted.   But it did feel good that she WAS busted for the whole fraud thing.  One of the reasons, I believe, she was caught is that her bank statements (interest earned, deposits made) were more than double what she made.    The numbers just didn't add up right.   (She claimed welfare, state subsidies, gov't programs, while working full time, collecting unemployment, renting out part of her house (basement apt), and charging me rent.   Her monthly income was well over 10k deposited into the bank, not counting the cash she never put in from rent.)    She also rented out part of her house and didn't claim that income either.   Her kids got into legal trouble, which caused some other things to be investigated.

The third family (abroad) has been  pretty good.   They semi-feed him and don't demand or ask for anything over and above the agreed amount for rent.   Their kids are not in trouble with the law.  All is good.  And they most definitely do NOT try to get state or gov't benefits for my son to be there.   They do however, charge extra rent if my son wants to have a friend spend the night.  And they never let any of his friends eat a crumb of their food.   (My son has a stash of food in his room that he/me pays for so he can offer refreshments to his friends.)   This family makes very good money.   They don't even touch the money I put into their account.  They just verify  that I paid for the month.

In all three situations, I more than financially covered all of the costs for my son to be there, as well as put profit in the families pockets.

The first two situations - they definitely had the "entitlement" attitude.  Ugh.  The wonderful Gods and universe helped get him out of those homes.

Re: Frustrated with Gov't Funded Programs

If you want to really get mad about wasteful government spending, check out this article:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703749504576172942399165436.html

A few quotes:

"A report from the nonpartisan GAO [Government Accountability Office], compiles a list of redundant and potentially ineffective federal programs, and it could serve as a template for lawmakers in both parties as they move to cut federal spending and consolidate programs to reduce the deficit. Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.), who pushed for the report, estimated it identifies between $100 billion and $200 billion in duplicative spending."

"The agency found 82 federal programs to improve teacher quality; 80 to help disadvantaged people with transportation; 47 for job training and employment; and 56 to help people understand finances, according to a draft of the report reviewed by The Wall Street Journal."

Fifty-six different and seperate programs funded by the federal government to "help people understand finances". I wonder what they try to teach; maybe "don't spend more money than you make"? If only Congress could understand that concept...

Re: Frustrated with Gov't Funded Programs

I am guessing she receives some type of government assistance?  If she does she is automatically qualified to receive free or reduced lunches for her children.  I don't see this as being greedy or anything.  If it is there to use and she qualifies based on the fact she receives TANF, why not use it.

I have been on both sides of the fence.  I had to be on government assistance when my kids were younger to make ends meet.  I also had them on free/reduced lunches.  With the price of school lunches it helped tremendously.  For 2 kids I was paying $4.00 a day for lunches.  That is $100 a month.  And I did not feel bad doing it.  Why should I?  I knew my kids would eat and I could pay my bills.

There are those that abuse the system but not everyone does.  I have seen people driving Cadillacs and living in very expensive houses who receive state help.  Never understood how they did that.

Recently, in WA state, a doctor and his wife were charged with fraud for receiving section 8, I believe.  They said she was a tenant and he was the landlord.  At any rate, they lived in a $1.4 million dollar house receiving over $1000 a month for assistance.

This is the kind of fraud that irritates me.

Re: Frustrated with Gov't Funded Programs

While I completely agree that some people need this assistance - that is not the case with my step son's mother.

The free lunch program application specifically asks how many children you have that you are the primary custodial parent for.  By claiming that she is the primary custodial parent for my step son does make her qualify but in actuality - she is not primary.  She intentionally filled out the paperwork using only her income for a child that does not live with her during the week.

In other words - every parent in america that is out of work (even if they are married and their spouse works) can claim this entitlement program by just putting down their income.
