Re: Getting ready for the hurricane!!

My dad and another friend have taken a look at our house and said there is only minor damage and NO flooding in the area.Smiley Very Happy

The news reports that we can't go home until Friday afternoon Smiley Sad and that there's a possibility that  homes will probably be without electricity and water for 3 weeks. Smiley Sad Smiley Sad Smiley Sad

For the time being we have food and shelter in Jackson, MS so we are very thankful.

Re: Getting ready for the hurricane!!

I am working tonight but plan on going home sweet home tomorrow morning.  We will be without electricity for 3 to 6 weeks, but I will stay home on my days off and sleep at the hospital on the days that I work.  I have no idea how I am going to wash clothes but I guess I will figure it out.

Lafourche Parish opened up at 4 pm this afternoon but Terrebonne Parish isn't opening until Friday morning.  Being without power sucks big time, but it could be worse around here.

The thing that really upsets me is all you hear about is New Orleans.  The brunt of the storm hit here, not New Orleans.  What about us?

The news crews were in NOLA. They got all excited about the Caernarvon levee, but they were otherwise left looking pretty flat.

3 to 6 weeks? My mother once went without power for 4 weeks in Memphis, after a microburst, I suppose it was. C'mon, people, this is within the city limits.

This morning, I drove past 9 rented (from Penske) utility trucks --all cherry-pickers --with three private vehicles behind them, idling on the turn lane onto I-40. I don't know if they originated here, or if they over-nighted on the way down from farther north. But it looks like help is on the way. I remember seeing the same thing after 9/11 and Katrina.

Good luck to you and all of your family, friends and neighbors!

Well, there's a very long tradition of big cities dominating disaster reports. Bet you've never heard of the fire that killed maybe 800, maybe 1000, maybe 2500 people, nobody will ever know the exact number, in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, which I only know about because I grew up in Wisconsin. In OUR history classes we sure learned about it. It was the same day in 1871 as the Great Chicago Fire (in which maybe 300 people died) so the Chicago fire dominated the news reports and nobody outside Wisconsin remembers it today, even though far more people died in Peshtigo than in Chicago. Several other towns in the Great Lakes region also had bad fires that terrible summer.

One of my favorite hymns was written by a man who lost his business in the Chicago fire, then his family to shipwreck:

I have thought of this hymn often since my sister's death in an October 2007 car accident. September 7th would be her 46th birthday.

Re: Getting ready for the hurricane!!

We made it to Dallas and DH called about 10:30 am to complain our town was being looted like crazy and to get my rear back home. We didn't get but a bit of wind and some rain, so we are good here. I'm sorry for those that will be without power for awhile. I did pass a few convoy's of power trucks that were from Missouri, so hopefully they will be able to get to the affected area's soon and get them up and running.

DH is still in NO and angry that they are being made to stack water and guard MRE's. (People keep opening them to take the one thing they like out and chunking them back in the box, so, geesh!!) He said it rained for maybe an entire 10 mins. Why they are still there doing little of nothing there is beyond me. Well, I could say, but it has to do with the "P" word, so I won't get started. Glad everyone is pretty much ok!

Re: Getting ready for the hurricane!!

I finally left my sister's  house this morning because my mother returned from Texas yesterday and her power came back on last night after curfew.  Anyhow, I was just informed that I have power but still no cable.  My mother has her cable as you can see.  I have been going crazy not being able to get online.  My brother in law's sister lives in New Orleans and she stayed  through the storm and stated all she got was wind and rain.

It has been very  hectic her because the majority of the stores are not open and the majority of gas stations are not either.  You have to wait 3 hours or more in the gas stations that are open.  It has got  to get better than this.  I was able to take my food to my sister's house so that it would not spoil and I am so glad that I did because you can't  get anything right now.

I live in Hawaii, so we would use it to bbq food. Hurricanes aint no fun, I know this being from Hawaii and spending a lot of time in Guam. Super typhoons (sustained winds of 155 mph) in the Western Pacific Ocean are very scary.
