Has your reason for finding this forum changed since you learned about credit?

When my spouse and I found this forum we were looking at ways to fix our credit in order to buy a home.

After learning so much about credit, from this forum, and getting things straightened out, we've decided we are not going to buy another home yet.

From the success we've had since we got serious about this in Jan/Feb'ish, we figured we could have much more success with our scores over the next year or so.

After learning here that higher scores means lower interest rates(normally), we want to both have at least  700 scores before trying to buy.

So, has your reason for finding this forum changed since you've become educated?

Pretty much the same. Originally it was to buy a house (close in 2 weeks !), now I realize, after a lot of education on this board, I need to work on getting a few new cards as I also come out of a debt management plan. Goal is to be in the 700 club and on up...and to keep my credit clean, using it responsibly.

Starting Score: EQ 679, TU 697
Current Score: EQ 680, TU 672
Goal Score: EQ 720, TU 720

Re: Has your reason for finding this forum changed since you learned about credit?

I had just bought my home with awful credit. Got stuck with a crappy ARM. I realized that if my AC, plumbing, whatever were to break, I would have no way to pay for it.

I set out to get a credit card with a decent limit just in case. And I found the FICO forums. I have many now, so I guess I don't have a reason to be here aside from removing one more collection, supporting others, and getting my scores to 700.

Re: Has your reason for finding this forum changed since you learned about credit?

I haven't posted much (outside of the SmorgasBoard) but just lurking about has helped me understand how my dealings with the CCC and my debtors in the past has hurt my score.

When I bought a house two years ago, my credit score was a wonderful 741, and that made it a breeze to get the house.  But I was lousy with credit cards and didn't know anything about keeping the util. down...missed payments...applied for credit WAY too many times all over the place.  blah blah blah, right?

well, of course that killed my credit.  So much so it got down below 600 before I even noticed.

But it's creeping back up there...just hit the triple 6 last I checked *eeks!*  lol

Back to your question...
My reason for finding this forum...was for a guy...and finding out about my credit hasn't changed that.

I came here indirectly from the main goal of getting my credit scores.  I joined the forum to see what was going on and then started to learn.  Hopefully I also was able to help people and  these days i am just waiting for majpr derog info to fall off.

So to answer the question I would say yes.

I might be the odd man out here on the board. lol I dont really have credit issues, nor questions about it (yet). I was directed to this board and was gladly surprised by the amount of information the user and especially the mods had regarding FICO scores. Since my first experience with myFICO and FICO roughly 4 years ago, I was lucky enough to obtain some useful information so I decided to sign up and see what I could do to help out Smiley Happy

Nice post, R1ch.  We're glad you're here.

I stumbled on these forums by accident last September.  I was tired of having bad credit, so I decided to do something about it once and for all.

See my siggy for a breakdown of how much these forums have helped me in the ten months since I first joined.

Re: Has your reason for finding this forum changed since you learned about credit?

When I first came here my only goal was to help DH improve his credit score.  He was under the impression that there was nothing he could do to improve it after the BK, and every time he started working on it by himself I could tell it dragged him down.  I was just trying to do something nice to pick up  his spirits.  Besides, I get a kick out of doing it and I love working with numbers.

When I took a good look at (scrutinized with a fine tooth comb) his report and read (devoured)  everything I saw here, I realized that there's a LOT he could do to improve his score.  I realized that it isn't enough to PIF our bills every month.  We also need to try to make those balances as low as possible.

Then I started looking at my own score.  When we bought the house in Nov. 2006 my FICO score was an exact 720, but lately it's been in the upper 600s.  I realized that too many inquiries last year and high util was hurting my score.  Now we've focused on paying down our util and GW'ing and PFD'ing some of DH's bad TLs so we'll be sitting pretty in case we decide to refinance our home or we have to relocate and buy a home somewhere else.

My son is also working on his FICO score now.  He's planning to propose Thursday night and buy a house in a year or two.

So how did it go for your son? Did he get a YES?
