The right to own & carry firearms is a lively topic I think and I'm curious how everyone approaches it. Personally my profile looks like this:
1. Currently own Smith & Wesson Sigma Model, 9mm.
2. The purpose is home protection.
3. I have a concealed carry permit but haven't found the correct hangun for this purpose yet.
Can't find 9mm amo, any suggestions?
greyhound2007,
I'm in the northern Metro Detroit area.
Sturm - Ruger 357
Sturm - Ruger 22
Kahr K-9 9mm
Beretta semi-auto 25 (I like this one for carry)
(and some more. all registered)
CCW, but very rarely carry. Lots of ammo
Make a connection with your local gun dealer!
The "Terminator" just signed lousy legislation on ammo this past week.
We CA owners will be stocking up before it takes effect.
As a retired Marine Major, I think like a soldier and I believe that as long as I am safe and reasonable with my guns, I should be able to have and use them for personal protection, family protection, home protection, or even for fun, such as target practice, teaching spouse and child and/or hunting. That being said, I have:
9mm Beretta Brigadier, Stainless Steal, back rubber-no slip-grips, two mags
45 ACP Springfield Armory, black finish, compact officer edition, two mags
308 Remington 750 military/police sniper rifle (I was a sniper, so it is a fitting gift from my men)
I had:
AR-15, S&W 38 revolver, 7.65 mm Luger but had to sell the first two but gave the Luger to my grandfather, god rest his soul passed this last fall.
I want to get when I have some available funds to burn:
AR-15, S&W Revolver, debating 40 or 44
I have permits for all of them and when I was living in Indiana, had a carry permit but back home in California, you can't even come close to carrying it unless you pay a city government official a butt load of money to get a "carry badge" and also gets you out of tickets. I ethically couldn't bring myself to do that, even though I have the connections, friends in LAPD, SFPD, CA State, FBI, DOD, DOJ, you get the idea.
Anyway, hope that answers your question, Semper Fi brother.

jackg, may I suggest taking a look at the Ruger LCP .380 Auto (I think they've got it in a 9mm, too). Nice piece, popular around here with the local PDs as backup weapons. Lightweight, and takes a beating and stays reliable.

Personally, don't have a gun, don't want one. However, I firmly believe in others rights to have one -- with the cavet that it is kept safely and legally. I personally don't see the need for a handgun, however at times I have thought about target shooting.
demi,
Personally, I like the way you think and agree with everything you said. Ours are kept in a gun-safe, and out of reach. (for the most part)
I was raised by parents who were both hunters. Deer hunting season was a family vacation. In the mountains, in a tent or a lean-to, a campfire to cook on, and the stars at night. Disneyland was still Walt's dream. I trekked lots of miles over the Sierra's with my parents, enjoying every step. (This was back in the days when you could leave camp in the morning with everything out on the table and no one would enter your camp and everything would be where you left it. Don't try that now!) ![]()
It all came to an end when I married a city-guy who didn't know a butt from a muzzle but I taught my girls how to handle and to respect firearms. They, have taught their children the same and a few times a year, we go target shooting together. My oldest girl has more guns than I do and the lucky little snit married a hunter!
Go to a gun shop and check it out. The good ones can set you up and a lot of them give lessons in gun safety. You can see if it's something you'd enjoy pretty in-expensively. Now, if you end up really liking it, it can get rather expensive! One of the sweet little-old-ladies I used to work with had thousands of dollars tied up in guns. I would never have imagined she even owned a gun until I read that her daughter was the national skeet-shooting champ! Momma was her coach!
If you decide to try it, come back and tell us if you liked it?

Personally, jackg, you can't go wrong with good ol' fashioned American bangsticks. S&W is a fine firm, as are Ruger, Springfield, and Mossberg.
I'm the proud owner of a service model Springfield XD .45 ACP in classic black finish. Ammo is as rare as hen's teeth around these parts, especially for popular calibers like the .45, .38, et al. I'm lucky I got a box of Blazer. Not by choice, mind you, it was literally the only brand available at my local gun shop. All the others were sold out for months to come.
On my wish list is a Ruger SR-556 (I think that's it's proper name) rifle, .44 Mag revolver (probably going with a Taurus, as Colt products are overpriced), Ruger LCP .38, and a Sig Sauer Mosquito .22 LR.
