Re: How many do not have cash in their wallets? :)

I rarely have cash. I might start out with $50 in my purse.  Kids will bleed me dry in no time. Don't go get more until I need it for something.

Re: How many do not have cash in their wallets? :)

I always carry some cash.

I've learned the hard way. Because you never know when an enemy country can launch an EMP on the United States and then all of a sudden, no ATM's work or anything bank-related that deals with electronics........................ okay, just kidding.

But, seriously, you never know when you might be stuck in a situation where the cards don't cut it.

It happened to me on the Parkway in Jersey. I had my car break down and apparently I got the only tow truck driver who didn't have a wireless POS, so, I was lucky I had enough cash to endure the trip. Sure, I could have had him stop at an ATM, but it's not exactly a taxi service.

There's always also the inevitable diner or restaurant that just decides they don't want to pay merchant fees on POS' and go all in with cash or house their own ATM machines with a $5 fee. I actually went to a bar that did this, scratch that... two. Sometimes the bars will have a minimum tab at $50 and I am not always going to get to that figure.

So, I always keep it handy, just in case.

And in New Jersey, there's usually a disparity between cash and credit gas since the whole state is full serve by law.

Under the Dodd-Frank Act, merchant can only set minimum transaction amount on credit card no greater than $10.00. So next time if those bars tell you about the $50 minimum tab again tell them they are braking the law. Keep in mind for debit/prepaid card merchants are NOT allowed to set minimum transaction amount, according to Visa, MC, and AMEX merchant policies (Discover never publicized its merchant policy). Should you find merchant doing this on debit/prepaid card you can file complaint to Visa, MC, and AMEX. I actually filed complaints to a bookstore on $25 minimum transaction before and that bookstore no longer does that. I guess card network companies warned the owner about it.

I don't carry cash on me in general. I live in the city and its not safe to keep boatloads of money on you. CCs are universally accepted so if I'm going to get robbed I'd rather they take my CCs which I can dispute. I keep some cash at home in case I do go out to a bar, need to pay for parking, etc.

Re: How many do not have cash in their wallets? :)

I carry cash less now that I have my shiny new AMEX.  Before, I would carry the cash so I wouldn't have to carry my debit card, since I was a victim of card theft so many times over.  Living in Los Angeles has its perks, but there are some serious thieving individuals out here folks.  Now that I have a card that I know is good with disputes or with theft of cards, I probably carry between 5 and 20 dollars for valet/meters/tips and that's about it unless I know ahead of time I am going to a cash only location.
