I don't think that there is a helmet law in WI. If there is, it is largely ignored. I don't ever think that I have seen a Harley rider wearing a helmet. Conversely, I see the younger riders on their "crotch-rockets" wearing helmets.

It should not be required. It is the riders fault if they choose to ride without one. There is no surprise what happens without proper gear and it is a risk they decide to take. Always wear proper gear which includes more than a helmet. I nod my head when I see guys with flip flops, wifebeaters and shorts...
As I said above, my problem with the non-helmet-wearers is that so often they have inadequate or no medical insurance, and if they wipe out, their injuries tend to be terribly disabling, and the rest of us wind up picking up the bill. On top of which, they generally wind up at the public/ teaching hospitals, which are grossly underfunded and under-reimbursed anyway, and they wind up being a catastrophic financial loss for these hospitals, which then have less money to spend on all the others who need it.

It's the old conflict between civil liberties, which I support, and civic responsibilities. There are only so many dollars to go around, especially in healthcare.

There is not a helmet law in Texas. There once was an attempt to make a law that required riders to wear helmets. It was passed but it was short lived and repealed or something.

Helmet law or not: wearing a helmet is smart. Not wearing one is dumb. Just like a seat belt.

Some say let those who ride decide. I say look the eyes of your child or grandchild or wife or husband or...whoever and then decide.

Re: I figured out how to go from 14 mpg to 45 mpg Guarenteed!

When I was a kid, I went through the usual horse craze. We grumbled about having to wear riding helmets, especially in the summer. (Black velvet and steel in the sun are heat magnets!)

One day we were practicing jumping without stirrups or reins, arms folded, when a stirrup came loose and starting kicking my horse. She panicked and bolted, and I was way off balance. I wound up hanging under her neck for a few moments, and then I let go. She crow-hopped over me (horses prefer not to step on soft, squishy things like people), but when I got up, I had the perfect outline of a horseshoe on my helmet.

I call all helmets, riding, football, motorcycle, whatever, brain buckets!

I bought a bicycle for my 2 mile trek between the train station and home.

Unless you measure MPG in terms of miles per gallon of lattes ...

DF and I just bought TREK's last weekend. Good ride, great exercise. Dangerous to ride on the road where I live...scary.

Last Saturday, we ran 3.5 miles in the morning. Then, we bought the bikes and biked about 5 miles. Then went and bought new running shoes and as a manner of testing out the shoes, we had to run on the treadmill, so that the salesperson can make a recommendation. My legs just stopped hurting this morning.
