You know what I'm talking about, right? You go into a store, buy something with your credit card, 5 seconds later you get a notification on your phone "Your credit card purchase for $5.56 at Duane Reade was approved". I love this feature so much. Works with automatic reoccurring online transactions too. Once a month I get "Your credit card purchase for $21.72 at MyFico was approved".
I get this via the Capital One Wallet app. I love it so much. Works great in tandem with my YNAB budget...especially for those automatic reoccurring online transactions...I get the notification, enter it into YNAB...perfect budgeting.
But, now that I have seen the light, I am missing it with my checking account! I know Simple has this feature with their app. But Simple doesn't work for me. I see Capital One has a new app, which is surprisingly a very nice looking app too. If it works the same way with their checking accounts, including 360, I will be very tempted to move my checking to them.
Anyone have any experience? Or how other banks/checking accounts that do the same?
I also have the new Capital One 'Wallet' app and love it... I only wish they would integrate it with the regular Capital One app so I could do everything in one place. Actually, the instant notification feature is the only feature the that makes having 'Wallet' necessary.
As for other banks, I use both Wells Fargo and USAA, and while I haven't done much with the Wells Fargo notifications I do actively use the notifications feature on the USAA Android app for my checking account, and it works very well. I have it set to notify me anytime a transaction of $100 or more (debit, ach, or check) clears my account, and it has worked reliably. The USAA app seems to be near-real time as well, since my notifications occur in the early AM hours as the transactions are cleared.

I THINK the NEW new app, not Wallet, but the one I linked in my post is, or will be, an all in one app. It's hard to tell, looking at it, in the settings, some of the stuff says "comign soon". That's iOS though, sounds like you use Android...I don't know about that.

Ah, yep, you're right. I went back and followed your link to the app on iTunes, and it is a little different than the Android app. From the looks of it the iOS app is exactly what I wished I had!
Maybe they are 'getting it right' on the iOS platform first and will eventually get around to making it that way on Android. Either way, having the extra app isn't that big of a deal when it comes down to it, and the instant notification feature is definitely worth it.
I will also add that the 'instant' part of the Capital One notifications is the best part. I placed an online order to an company in Australia, and only seconds after hitting the 'submit' button on my computer my phone notified me that the transaction had been approved (complete with the exact amount of the sale in USD; the transaction was in AUD). It could have just been luck, but the transaction posted a few days later with the exact dollar amount of the alert.
Definite 'kudos' to the Capital One tech team for getting this right!

And THAT is exactly what I want, but for all my transactions....credit card, debit card, transfers, and paper checks clearing.
I use alliant as my secondary banking institution, I have alerts set up for any withdrawl over .01 and I get alerts anytime something posts. My primary banking CU also has that feature, tho I have it disabled, as I move money in and out of there 2-3x a week, and transfers between savings, checking and payments get to be annoying... (you have transfered 230 dollars from savings account ending in 00001 to checking account ending in 00002... 10 seconds later checking account 00002 has recieved a transfer of 230dollars from savings account ending in 00001. BLAH I know, I just did it.) the alliant account I leave it on, it doesn'tget used much so I get maybe 3-4 alerts a month. Couple auto pays and an auto transfer from the other CU account.

What kind of alerts does Alliant give you? Text? Email? From the app?
I have it set to email, I believe you can set it to text as well. here is my share secured loan payment (auto debit from savings) my massive paycheck (bartender so taxes for tips come out of my check) and moving money from my other CU account for my closing money for my house.

Toothgrind3r, you got me to thinking about this, so I checked out my USAA app and the settings are pretty extensive for alerts, so I set the app to notify me for any Visa credit card transaction greater than $1, and I lowered my checking account withdrawal setting to $1 as well (previously $100). I've never used my debit card for a transaction above $100 so I've never had a debit transaction trigger my previous alert (I always use my credit card for the rewards) but now that the threshold for the alert is lowered I'll be able to see how well it responds to debit card activity. The unknown is whether a debit card purchase will alert upon authorization (I hope) or upon posting, but it will be easy to test out. For my purposes, if the new setting doesn't create alerts for the debit card upon authorization it will be of little use, since I check my account daily anyway.
I can say from my experience last year with Wells Fargo email alerts, they weren't very timely. I was able to see a deposit by logging on to the website *hours* before receiving an email from them. I don't have enough transactions with Wells to warrant bothering with testing out their mobile alerts (I only use them to occasionally deposit cash or to get change when needed and generally keep a small balance). I'm thankful for your original post for making me think of tweaking and testing the capabilities of the USAA app!
Edit: Changed $.01 to $1; USAA minimum for alerts is $1

This is excellent, I never noticed the alerts section! (I use Alliant).
So now I have set up:
Notify me when a Debit/Check Card purchase occurs on account S40 CHECKING
Notify me when an amount over $0.01 is transferred from account S40 CHECKING
I think that might be redundant....but I'm not sure if "debit/check card purchases" would include online transactions...so we'll see.
