@UncleB wrote:Toothgrind3r, you got me to thinking about this, so I checked out my USAA app and the settings are pretty extensive for alerts, so I set the app to notify me for any Visa credit card transaction greater than $.01, and I lowered my checking account withdrawal setting to $.01 as well (previously $100). I've never used my debit card for a transaction above $100 so I've never had a debit transaction trigger my previous alert (I always use my credit card for the rewards) but now that the threshold for the alert is lowered I'll be able to see how well it responds to debit card activity. The unknown is whether a debit card purchase will alert upon authorization (I hope) or upon posting, but it will be easy to test out. For my purposes, if the new setting doesn't create alerts for the debit card upon authorization it will be of little use, since I check my account daily anyway.
I can say from my experience last year with Wells Fargo email alerts, they weren't very timely. I was able to see a deposit by logging on to the website *hours* before receiving an email from them. I don't have enough transactions with Wells to warrant bothering with testing out their mobile alerts (I only use them to occasionally deposit cash or to get change when needed and generally keep a small balance). I'm thankful for your original post for making me think of tweaking and testing the capabilities of the USAA app!
Let me know how it works out for you!
Instant (or near instant) transaction notifications are awesome on so many levels ![]()

Definitely will do! I had to edit my original post to reflect $1 instead of $.01, since USAA wouldn't allow me to put in an amount less than $1, but if it works as we hope it will (on debit auth) I can overlook that slight limitation. I should have an update in a few days at the latest ![]()
alliant is as close to instantaneous as possible... I pulled the cashier's check for my downpayment on Thursday and had the email notification before I left the branch.

Thanks for letting me know about Alliant's alerts...gonna try it out and see how it works.
OK, I have more info on the USAA notification feature.
I have the app set to notify me of any transactions over $1 (the lowest setting available). The results were actually exactly reversed from what I was expecting.
With my credit card, no notification was sent when it was used (at time of auth), but I got a notification once the transaction posted to the account. With the checking account, there was a notification when the debit card was used/authorized. I suspect there will be another notification once the transaction posts, but it hasn't been long enough yet (the OP was concerned about notification at the time of use, which is why I'm reporting now).
Since I'm really interested in getting notification when the card is used, I'll be turning it off for the credit card. I really don't need to get 5-10 alerts in the middle of the night notifiying me what has posted, since by then I've had days to see them online in 'Pending' status. As for the alert on the checking account, it will be of limited use since I only use the debit card a few times a year (literally), but I'll likely leave it on in the event there were to be activity on the debit card I would know right away.
Hope this helps somebody, if nothing else maybe someone can find use in the data points.

Anyone have any experience? Or how other banks/checking accounts that do the same?
I have most of the apps I bank or have credit cards with and so far only Amex, Discover and Chase would instantly show up whereas BofA, US Bank and others would take some time before they pop up on the screen. Love this feature though (for fraud protection). ![]()
